Thicket
Gentle | Thoughtful | Solitary

Thicket is a gatherer, spending all of his days collecting wild fruits, berries, nuts, and plant matter for the clan. He doesn't speak much and prefers to do his job with no one around, and can be quite awkward in casual conversation. He feels happiest when he's on his own gathering edible things for his clan.

The orchard and farm tended by other clan members are also his duty to harvest. He leaves the semi-spoiled apples on the ground for wild animals to eat, and will sometimes bring a small bag of them into the forest with him to give to the creatures he befriends. His cerdae familiar, Fern, helps him carry bags of produce and foraged plants, meaning he has to make far fewer trips than he did before he met her.

The wind whispered through the trees above, tousling his mane as he paused to watch the birds above him. He came here every summer to harvest the raspberries that the wild animals hadn't yet managed to eat, and always loved how peaceful and untouched this part of the forest was. His pack was already filled with a menagerie of edible plants, and he'd even been lucky enough to find a nearly untouched grapevine that had been sheltered by small hawthorn shrubs, meaning he had plenty to bring home for his clan and a supply for later.

His pleasant thoughts were interrupted by the rustling of bushes, and he instinctively ducked, worried someone had found his hidden spot. However, it wasn't a dragon but a cerdae that emerged into the clearing. They seemed equally startled, but before the equid could flee he put out a hand, trying to show he meant no harm. He had brought along an apple he harvested that morning from the orchard for lunch and quickly pulled it out, offering it to the cerdae. It approached hesitantly but was clearly hungry, and he saw then that its leg was badly injured, explaining why it was so willing to accept food.

For the next few days he returned to the clearing, bringing along with him an apple. Each day he found his new friend there. On the last day, he came this time with a woven rope, and slipped it around the cerdae's neck. He was grateful when it came with him willingly, and he stroked its mane as they walked, supporting its shoulder as it limped beside him. He led it straight to Lucian's hut, hoping the apothecary would have something to help, and in few words explained the situation. She, like him, rarely spoke to others and he was appreciative when she went straight to work. The cerdae stood silently as its leg was braced and the wound slathered in a strong-smelling poultice, though its ears flicked anxiously as she worked.

After some time, the skydancer turned to Thicket. "She will recover." She turned without another word and returned to tending her garden. He left her a pile of fresh plants as thanks, then gently helped the cerdae walk back the way they had came, this time turning onto a small trail he had made. They went to his small den in the woods and he led her in, coaxing her with an apple through the door made of hanging vines. There he had already prepared a small spot on the ground, soft grasses arranged into a nest with a bowl of water and an apple laid out for her. "May I call you Fern?" He asked her, and she nuzzled him gently before laying down. He took that as a yes.

Fern recovered, though she still walked with a slight limp. She began to follow him on his gathering trips and he gave her bags that he looped over her back, tied on with vines so that they wouldn't slip off. She regained her strength over time and soon he only needed to make a few trips in a day, bringing home vast quantities of food for the growing clan thanks to how much she could carry. He was still always careful to only harvest what he needed, tending to the plants of the forest and planting new ones where he harvested from. Through it all he had a companion, something he'd never imagined he'd want. Her quiet company is more than enough to make him feel happy - he's never alone anymore, and he wouldn't want it any other way.
