———— Before Anatole knew the touch of wet grass underfoot and open starlit skies, they knew marble and murals, the whispers passed between mouths in those palatial halls. They danced for His Grace as the eyes of the court watched, and sat by His side when none bore witness.

Their body belonged to many, but their heart belonged to Him.

So Anatole did not mind playing marionette to His Grace. They welcomed the tug of their strings as He guided them to seduce rival nobility, to fabricate evidence of wrongdoing, to echo their whispers in His ear.

They performed a most precarious diplomatic dance, narrowly skirting death by their silks, yet managed to sidestep it in flawless rhythm.

Love proved to be more fatal than the poison with which He filled their goblet.

Anatole's body survived, but their heart shattered beyond recognition. Flowing steps slowed to an aimless amble, before discovering tempo and purpose in the troupe.

An escort in life, they dance for themselves in death.
