Biography

lighttop.png
LIGHT_2.png Alaunus, the name of the Gaulish god of sun, prophecy, and healing. It means "bright or light".

Alaunus had prophetic dreams as a hatchling and trained to become The Herd's head healer and alchemist. He interprets signs from the world around him to help his new family.

Alaunus woke up in a cold sweat. The screams had disturbed him once again, would they ever let him sleep? He knew about the damn prophecy, they didn't have to remind him night after night with visions of blood, severed limbs, those cruel eyes... Alaunus had yet to figure out who the dreams were about. He had always assumed it was the Guardian that killed Vagar, Erysichthon had come home that night wailing about a Guardian murdering the younger prince. Erysichthon didn't get a good look at him, apparently it had happened too fast. Alaunus growled himself back into the present. If he didn't get a good night's rest, he would start muttering nonsense and make his clanmates think he was mad. Alaunus was a bit mad already, but the perfect amount. Either way, Alaunus sat up, shook himself, and spun around a few times before settling back in.
"Trouble sleeping?" Alaunus jumped, lifting his head to gaze into the Skydancer Aelwen's gaze.
"You could say that." The healer muttered. Aelwen took a step back and jerked her head, motioning him to follow. Alaunus hauled himself up and followed the knight. She led him out into the moonlight, nodding to her captain, Bouris, on their way out.

The moonless night air was crisp. Not a single cloud interrupted the vast blanket of stars watching over them curiously. Aelwen waited for Alaunus to step beside her before lifting off gracefully. These night flights were a common occurence for them, Aelwen didn't sleep much as is and the nightmares didn't exactly give Alaunus a good night's sleep. She never questioned his insomnia. But that night was different.

"Have you noticed anything strange about Prince Erysichthon?" Alaunus was startled by Aelwen's question.
"How do you mean?"
"I've seen him in the lava fields, alone, murmuring things and clutching himself so hard he bleeds. He just seems so... off. Has he come to you or Fiona about anything?" Alaunus thought back to the last time he treated the prince for strange claw wounds on his upper arms. "Thorns, chasing prey." was all he'd ever growl of the matter.
"He's come for some healing herbs for some scratches every now and then, but that's it. I'd just assumed he'd been acting strange since his brother was murdered in front of him." Aelwen nodded and focused ahead, silently thinking. Alaunus's eyes narrowed in thought. He'd always thought it strange that Prince Vagar had been killed so quickly, having trained under both Bouris and Kage. How had Erysichthon not even see the assassin? It was a huge Guardian for Flamecaller's sake... The thought hit Alaunus like a train. "It was him! Prince Erysichthon killed Prince Vagar!" Aelwen froze mid flight and gazed at him confused. "Think about it! Wasn't it weird how Erysichthon came home smelling like garlic? He'd obviously rolled in it to cover the scent of blood! And he told us Vagar's body fell into the river, but why didn't Erysichthon retrieve it? And don't tell me it was because he was squeamish, I've seen that boy rip a boar's head off and eat it." Aelwen's furrow narrowed as she considered his words. Then she looked into his eyes.
"We can't accuse a member of the royal family of cold blooded murder, of his own brother, without any proof." Alaunus hissed and kicked the air. As usual, the Skydancer was right.
"Let's just go home." Alaunus muttered before winging off.

Once they were back in the cave, the healer couldn't help but steal a glance in the direction of the royal family's nest. Then he shook himself and told himself he was being ridiculous, curling up in his mossy nest. Of course the prince wouldn't murder his own brother, right?

Alaunus's eyes shot open to a familiar scene. Bouris's severed head in the corner, Zephyra's scales littering the ground here and there, Anais's unseeing eyes ripped from her skull, other dismembered parts of his clan, you know, the usual. Alaunus knew what came next, and the piercing shriek from the back of the lair confirmed it. As usual, Alaunus raced around the corner to find Ayda in the clutches of some dark shadow. A cruel claw sliced her fair throat open, and she fell to the ground. Vulcan launched himself at the shadow, ony to fall dead once it's jaws met his neck. Alaunus stood still and watched the slaughter of his clan; no one was safe from the shadow, hatchlings cried as they watched their snarling mother was ripped from their nest to have her wings ripped off, only to suffer the same fate moments later. Once the shadow had grown bored of watching the dying clan, it would turn towards Alaunus. This was the part he hated most. It stepped forward until it was nose to nose, the scent of blood and death upon it's musty breath. Then it spoke. "You could have stopped this, you coward." Alaunus started screaming in anger at its words. "WHO ARE YOU?! WHAT DO YOU WANT?!" The shadow simply laughed as it slunk past the enraged Skydancer. Alaunus turned to give chase when he stumbled over a mass at his feet. Turning back, he saw it was Aelwen, her eyes glassy and pale. This was new. This was horrible. Alaunus screamed in horror and backed away, only to feel a presence behind him. He whipped around, gazing into eyes of merciless fire. The shadow opened it's mouth once more, but instead of the voice that sounded that claws scraping over bone, a far more familiar voice came through. "Alaunus?"

The healer's eyes shot open to find Prince Erysichthon looming over his nest. "Huh?"
"You were crying out in your sleep, is everything alright?" Alaunus focused on the prince's face. Those eyes... The healer realized the Imperial was waiting for an answer.
"Yes yes, I'm fine, just a bit of a nightmare is all." The prince nodded and backed away. Alaunus fell back into his nest with the revelation. Well ****.
