history
[year four]
Aurumbre spent just long enough with her birthclan and her parents to learn her father's story, and to promise that she had learned the lesson that her father had, without the pain, loss and suffering that he had. She had also had a crash course in building and maintaining a forge, as she was already promised to a different clan looking to start a forge. Her parents had purposely nested in the Ashfall to give her the advantage of being a Fire dragon at hatch.

As she was escorted to her new home in the high reaches of the Plateau, her nerves grew more bold. What if she wasn't able to start the forge? What if she did, but something went horribly wrong and someone was hurt or the clanlands were severely damaged? Bamboo was highly flammable, after all... She rode on the back of Nith, who had been sent to collect her. He could feel her trembling and chuckled lightly.

"Do not be concerned little one. You are young, and you will learn in time. The clan is not expecting you to be a master; you lack the experience to be so."

"But what if I burn something, or fail completely? What if--"

"Then you will learn from it. Everyone makes mistakes."

He started to angle downwards, floating from gust to gust expertly as they neared the Ascents which held the landbound portion of the clanlands. Aurumbre gasped as they flew over a collection of bamboo platform, effortlessly floating in the air above an area that was clearly being cultivated by a clan. Several nocturnes zipped over and around them, inspecting the intruders. They chirped to Nith, who nodded back, and banked away back to their posts. Nith took them clear over the clan as he continued to descend. He tilted his wings and executed a wide, graceful turn back towards the Ascents, but they were too low! Nith was heading straight for the solid rock that held the clanlands above a rushing sea. He tucked his great wings and slipped into a small crack in the rock. Aurumbre gasped and closed her eyes - mostly. Nocturnes whooped them on from their clingholds on the side of the small passage.

The gap suddenly widened out again and Nith flared his wings and seemed to hover for just a moment before he landed on a jut of solid rock below the top of the Ascent. The area was mostly bare dirt, with a small stand of bamboo clumped in one corner along the edge. There was a series of rock steppes that would bring her up to the secondary plateau of the clan should she wish to climb it instead of fly. On the far side of jut was a rickety looking structure in the middle of being constructed. She could hear a dragon inside, struggling to get things to work. A series of pulleys ran up to the top of the plateau, for the purpose of easily bringing bamboo down, she supposed. Following the lines up, she noticed one of the bamboo platforms tethered in the air above her. A series of fans and balloons kept it aloft.

"That's the Outpost Kite," Nith explained, sitting behind her. "Messengers come and go all the time, and anyone wishing to travel out of the lair must first check out with the Travelkeeper. Over there--" he motioned to the shaking shack in the corner, "will be the Woodshop, if Tenerey ever gets it completed..."

"I'm just a carver! Construction is not my area of expertise!" yelled a voice from the mess. Nith just laughed.

"And over here, is where the forge will be," he said, pointing to a small cave opening that she had missed the first time she looked. It didn't look like anything yet. She took a few steps forward, and peeked into the cave. Inside, she saw a great hulking shape, very similar to Nith.

"That's Gulshan. He's the clan's mason, and he's almost as new here as you are. He's supposed to be creating the forge space for you, but he's a bit..." he struggled to find the words, "slow? He should finish by the time you've grown into your full size. But until then, take some time to explore the upper parts of the clan. Just be careful not to fly too far away from the rises, or through the Trials - it takes a skilled flyer to manage the winds around here, which you will become in time. If you need me, I will be in the New Bamboo on the East Rise." He stood, flared his wings and leapt into the air, leaving Aurumbre on her own.

She took a deep breath and peeked into the cave again - the other guardian was still sound asleep. She decided to check out Tenerey instead. The building had stopped shaking as she made her way over to it, and a small bundle of fluff squeezed himself out of it. Even at her young size, she dwarfed him. He shook himself out and settled his fur back the way he liked it before looking up at her.

"Oh great, another guardian. Hopefully you're a little more friendly than Gulshan? He doesn't like to talk; like, ever. I'm Tenerey, I'm supposed to be the clan carver, but somehow I got stuck setting up the woodshop by myself. Who are you?"

"I'm Aurumbre, the forgekeeper."

"Aren't you a little young to be a forgekeeper?" he asked, tilting his head up at her.

"I've had some training from my father already. He's been a forgekeeper for years," she explained harshly. Tenerey flipped his tail at her and started to walk away.

"I've had enough pain for today. I don't have to finish right now, so I'm leaving. Bye."

"Bye," Aurumbre replied, watching the tundra fly away. She huffed and sat down again, looking at the workshop. It really was a mess. It could use a couple of steel fittings to keep everything in place, but that would require a working forge... she stood up again and trotted back to the cave. Going completely inside this time, she walked up to the sleeping guardian and tapped him on the shoulder. One deep brown eye opened, but it looked straight through her, focusing on nothing.

"Um, hello, Gulshan?" she whispered. The guardian's head lifted and "looked" at her.

"I hear you, little dragon," he shifted his forefeet across the smooth stone surface, "but I cannot see you as others do."

"Why not?"

"Because I am blind, in a traditional sense," he lightly poked her on the nose, "but I can use the magic of Earth to see shapes, through vibrations."

"So you see using magic? Cool! But, um, Gulshan, I was just wondering - I'm supposed to be setting up a forge in here, but it's not exactly ready for that... Nith said you were supposed to be preparing this space for that?"

"Ho! You're the one who will be sharing this space with me? What a surprise, a protege with an old master. Yes, perhaps I should finish this space. I'm just undecided about how it should be laid out? Perhaps you could help me with that?"

Over the next few weeks Aurumbre and Gulshan worked on a plan for the space - Gulshan would also be running his masonry out of the same cave, so he made sure that there was enough space for both of them. He gave Aurumbre the more solid side of the cave, where the walls and floor and ceiling were made of a hard, heat resistant granite. Aurumbre designed her space to fit a forge, and had Gulshan make the appropriate adjustments. It took time to get all the pieces in place, but finally the forge was ready.

By now Aurumbre had reached adulthood, young though she still was, and her confidence had grown greatly. She grabbed a shovel of coals from the fire that she had been tending outside the cave and brought them into the forge. She waited patiently as the fire caught and suddenly the forge belched to life, filling the cave with a bright orange glow and the sweet smell of smoke that reminded Aurumbre of her father. Now she could make useful things for the clan that had taken her in with good faith and trust in her natural abilities.

Late in the clan's fourth year, about half a year after she had come to the house of Windborne Sand, she was visited by Eheli, the clan's storekeeper. She recalled the recent order from the skydancer for a set of metal brackets for the shelves in the stuffed storehouse. Aurumbre shook the soot out of her wings and went outside to talk to the skydancer. Her metal and leather protective wear creaked as she moved - a sound that Eheli was strangely attentive to.

"First of all, I want to express my gratitude for your work - the shelves are holding up much nicer now than they had been in the past. As a thank you, I was able to sift through the accounts and find enough extra to get you a gift, should you choose to take it. I understand that, as a Guardian, there are extra precautions you have to take to working with fire - precautions that a coatl wouldn't need..."

Eheli opened her bag and produced a pristine scroll sealed with blue wax. Aurumbre tried not to show her excitement, but her wings quivered anyway. She took a deep breath.

"I graciously accept your gift; thank you!" she reached out and took the scroll. Eheli took wing and soared away, a knowing smile on her beak. Once the skydancer was out of sight, Aurumbre cracked open the seal and felt the heat of the magic rush over her scales. She felt herself shrinking and changing, felt the itch of new feathers coming in. Once the magic had done its work, she sneezed glitter and soot and went back inside the cave. Gulshan glanced in her direction.

"You walk lighter child, lighter than you did even as a hatchling."

Aurumbre didn't say anything, but just smiled. Gulshan would figure it out in time.
