Quote:
Though all of the Hollowguard's members are incredibly well-practiced within their specialty, Revali fancies himself to be the most experienced of the lot--and he isn't ashamed to admit this point to anyone who will listen. Incredibly skilled and incredibly haughty, Revali certainly didn't win his spot in the clan's exclusive guard program through charisma or social tact. Rather, as one of the clan's earliest members, he has had plenty of time to put his money where his mouth is; anyone who sees him apply his skills must admit that he has a genuine talent when it comes to archery.
Revali finds the honor that comes with participating in the Hollowguard suiting to his "tremendous ability," and, beneath all his theatrics, he genuinely takes pleasure in providing the dragons of the clan with safety. He considers it a worthwhile use of his talents, and he has never so much as considered taking another position. Even the drudgeries of the job, such as lengthy night watches, never seem to ruffle him. His hardiness is, to no surprise, another attribute in which he takes great pride.
Though he has been with the clan for some time, it is difficult to place him in any social sphere aside from that of the Guard. He spends most of his off-duty hours maintaining his skills or finding flowery ways to express his love for his mate, Aquamarine. The only deviances he makes from his comfortable routine are to mentor his apprentice, Smokescale, an aspirant Guardsdrake, or to write letters to the handful of his hatchlings who have left the clan. He takes little interest in festivals except inasmuch as they allow him to showcase his talents. He is ultimately quite socially awkward; boastfulness is how he masks this quality.
i. history
Revali was born to merchants in the Shifting Expanse whose caravan was misfortunate enough to be fallen upon by raiders when Revali was only a year old. The raiders slaughtered his unwary family without so much as a shred of remorse before running off with as many valuables as they could carry. Revali only survived the ordeal by burying himself in the sand at his mother's request.
His chances were bleak from the get-go, with most of the vital provisions having been scraped from the caravan. He had only a few days' rations, some of which were beginning to spoil, and the water supply was too low to last him even that long. The only other item of worth that remained was his uncle's bow and a scattering of arrows. Though he lacked even a shred of experience with the weapon, he took it with him when he departed the grisly scene. Even at his young age, he recognized that it was his only chance when it came to surviving any sort of repeat encounter with the raiders. Let alone any of the desert's other threats.
He learned quickly--he had no other choice. He traveled at night and sucked moisture from cactuses whenever he could find them. Hunger and thirst gnawed at him constantly, driving him forward despite the weariness that saturated his unpracticed limbs at all hours. He lived in constant fear of discovery, and he avoided any trace of dragonkind. The few memories he had of his parents' stops at dragon settlements were from too young a point in his life to be useful, and he only understood his fellow drakes as murderous raiders.
