Biography

Horizon, deepdelverxxxx
✺ ──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
xx Hatchlings born of Aquamarine and Revali are destined for battle—or so their parents assume. Whether that battle be to encourage downtrodden clanmates through the final steps of a grueling project or ward enemies away from the clan's crumbling walls, their children are known for strength and tenacity. To better prepare them for the trials of life, their parents dutifully help each one hone a skill of their choice. When they eventually leave the nest, they are always ready to bring something to the world, and their parents couldn't be prouder.
xx Despite his parents' knack for battle and weaponry, Horizon knew from an early age that the warrior trade wasn't for him. Growing up in the midst of the Dustcarve Dig, he was quickly fascinated with the wonderful world beneath his feet. With aid from his birth clan's many scholars, Horizon quickly grew into a capable archaologist well-versed in geology, mineralogy, and history. Armed with a wealth of knowledge, he set off into the world long after his other siblings had already left the nest, eager to make groundbreaking discoveries and meet the entire race of dragons unearthed by the Dig.

But life has a funny way of making things turn sideways... While the draconic world has a deep interest in archeology and digs around the continent are well funded and going strong, Horizon found very few that would take him on this crew. The history was plentiful, but dragons like him even more so; after the Obelisks appeared, every hatchling dreamed of unearthing their next new friends. And with the explosion of ancients creeping out from their hiding places... he ended up pursuing dead ends all over the world. The travel was also expensive, dangerous, and long; he was adequate at most things, flying and camping included, but monsters and the elements held him back often.

That is, until he met Matir. A travelling dragon like himself with a curious attachment to nature... She didn't mention it at first but he could tell how the plant life around her bent to her will. Figuratively and literally, as her sleeping form would practically be cocooned in tall grass and leaves that defied gravity to touch her scales. He ran into her trying to find a campsite in the canyons of the wind domain, where she had already bundled up against winter's chill and welcomed him into her temporary den with open claws. They talked all night, then into the next day, Matir ever so curious to hear about his adventures and listening to him ramble for hours and hours. It was like it was familiar to her, but she didn't have any experience in the field. After a few days they hit a rough patch- he barely even noticed whatever danger it was, some monster swooping or falling rock, before it was nothing but a swollen cocoon of flowers being lowered onto the canyon floor, as Matir's surprised reaction caused a burst of powerful nature magic to neutralize the threat. Shocked and amazed, he grilled her until she admitted she had magic beyond what he had ever HEARD of and could barely control it. It even drove her travel all over the world, and she didn't know why. Sympathy followed; while she was powerful, it came with costs to her body and psyche.

They agreed to stick together for the next couple weeks, and keep in touch once they split off. His new friend was heading South, though she seemed unhappy to do so. Horizon continued to have no luck, but occasionally got letters and messages from Matir describing new places, and she kept an eye out for possible dig sites for him to join. His hope stood strong; if he was anything personality-wise, it was hopeful. The break he needed came after another month since Matir's last letter- in the form of HER showing up at the door of his inn room, barreling into him and talking at a million miles an hour. After he helped get her unknotted so she could catch her breath, she explained.

Her new home was deep in the Reclaimed Glacier (he nearly choked when she said that- but of course she would find a way to live in a place of ice and death, with her power.) With a family of cavedragons and some odd neighbors. And under their home, their rocky crag in the middle of the middle of nowhere, there were artifacts imbedded in the ice! He barely let her keep talking after that, repacking all of the things he had just set out to get moving towards the undiscovered history she spoke of. Not only was this an opportunity, it was a NEW one! Instead of being a pair of assisting claws, he would be the FOUNDER of the next great dig!! She stopped him by thrusting a clawful of the items she had scraped out from the top layer to show him, and he nearly broke down sobbing with both joy and horror. He could instantly tell they were in surprisingly good condition, and with a few minutes of inspection with waggling tails and hushed voices he determined that they were from hundreds of years ago... But her clumsy collection had damaged them significantly. After some gentle scolding ("Thank you, but never dig something up for me again - leave it there and bring me to it") They set off into the night, Matir conjuring flowers and plants in a new combination she'd invented while out on the ice to create a honey-like nectar to keep them fed and energized so they could fly (dragons don't know what caffeine is, but that's what she's making.)

Once there, he followed the protocol she explained, discussed briefly with Tumi, an upstanding drake for this kind of life, and got to work marking out a cavern he was given for his work. Delays came in the form of interruptions - The constant greed and watching eyes of Vykos, and the arrival of an arrogant ***** and his shy, sweet mate kept his claws full. But eventually, he got to dig. Tireless from his glee, he carved his way several feet into the ice, preserving blocks with trinkets inside in a hidden rocky vault in the back so the crow-brained Vykos couldn't take them and ruin his work. And after 6 feet and weeks of work...

He broke the Sky.

A massive crack like an earthquake shook the crag as his claws hit the ice and reached warm air on the other side, and the ground beneath him splintered. The crack spread out of his cavern, under the snowfall outside, through the middle of the flat "center" of the sort-of-clan's base of operations where they discussed, met, and kept their shared supplies. Birds were startled from Matir's taiga and every dragon around raced to see what was happening, inspecting the deep split in the ice, trying to see what was undernearth as it hadn't opened up. Horizon could see the cave beneath himself and scrambled to chip away to squeeze himself inside- nobody told him about a cave! It was warm! It was new! What if the bounty of artifacts continued below, what if there was more to discover, what if what if what IF-

He twisted his wings and squeezed through the damp rock until the cavern opened up, and the onlookers from above could barely make out some moving shadows, blue first, then two more black ones facing him.

He came face to face with dragons. Dragons who looked at him like he was a ghost, bristled in terror as he shook snow off of his mane and babbled about being glad to meet them, baring their claws and barking back in an archaic dialect that took him a moment to process. They commanded him to come with them, calling him "the skybreaker". uh oh... He was taken by either front leg and dragged down the caverns until he got through to them that he would walk willingly, and they descended into darkness. On the surface, Matir realized he was missing, put two and two together, and panicked. Toham stopped her from following, but in doing so revealed that she knew things of the underground which the other dragons hadn't heard. She had some explaining to do...

...But Horiozn got to see it firsthand. The ecosystem below, other panicked dragons racing upwards where he had been brought from only to be stopped in their tracks they they saw him and needing to be calmed down by one of his guards or stopped from racing up to the surface. All of these dragons were scarred, wounded, muscled but lean, and dark colors that blended into the caves while he stuck out severely. His nerves only grew worse as they continued.

After hours, he reached the Subterrainian, and a nasty-looking mirror took over for his escort. If looks could kill, he would be dead by the way she sneered as she paced around him, as other curious and shocked dragons averted their gaze as if scared to look at her, and snarled in his ear that "the emperor" had requested Horizon be brought to him directly. Being led closely, he bowed his head and tried to look small- when Juliar's eyes were off of them, every dragon in this massive cavern could only stare at the odd newcomer, his clothes, his tools... he couldn't read them at all. It was like their world had been frozen.

Once Adondis started talking to him, he realized it had really been shattered. The black skydancer and his opulent private den felt much safer than the outside, and Horizon (sweating bullets) finally took a breath and apologized for anything, anything he'd done to disturb this... clan? He explained that he was digging under a mountain and was met with pure confusion from the ominous figure in front of him. After some back and forth, it became clear that Adondis and the Subterrainian clan had No idea that the surface world existed. Horizon's head was reeling with this situation- forget the damn obelisks, these were the isolated descendants of something, some old civilization, perhaps the very same who made the artifacts he came here for- but he was smart and scared enough to keep that internalized as Adondis inspected his clothes and gear. He didn't speak much after that- just nodded Horizon over to a nest in the corner and told him "wait." Before exiting to speak to Juliar, who was guarding the entrance. Once he returned he commanded Horizon to follow him, and they slipped out through a winding maze of tunnels behind a tapestry in Adondis' lair back up to the "Sky" with its crack run through it. There, Adondis warned Horizon to never return, under pain of "whatever she deems fit to do with the world ou come from." Not one to question that warning anymore, Horizon slipped back up to the surface and reunited with the horrified faces of his clanmates after Toham had told them what the Subterrainian was, what they were capable of, and scared the everliving daylights out of every clanmate who could feel fear.

Since then, Horizon's questions shifted dramatically. The entire Fractallian clan is on edge trying to avoid anything to do with their underground neighbors, and Toham's story was supported by the details from Horizon's testimony of what he'd seen. Debate flaired, worries grew, and eventually Tarmeux outright banned the discussion, growling to Tumi the translator who paled before announcing that "no Subterrainian discussion would be tolerated without teeth to the throat". And yet things only got worse from there...

Horizon came to the Fractallians to make the discovery of the century and very well may have found one for a lifetime - but in these tensions, the fear of outsiders, and the strange feeling like he was destined to pursue this deeper than his clanmates are willing to let him... That lifetime might not be so long.
