When Cinna was a young hatchling, she was a little mirror, a perfect twin to her sister Chie. Her big brother was an imperial and they were together. They were brought to Magnolia Realm, then called an Outpost, by the oldest of the lair, Elder Masaiyah, and by whom the three siblings adored with all their hearts. Cinna and Chie played too rough to join in the other hatchlings’ games and they had to entertain each other and Masaiyah watched over them. What an old fae could do against two baby mirrors, Cinna never quite figured out, but it was an effective strategy- they loved Masaiyah like the mother they never knew. They respected her and never played rough with her, or never even bit her tail once. However, even that high regard couldn’t stop the rage typical to the mirror breed. Chie and Cinna’s games grew harsher and more aggressive and Cinna began to bristle with rage at even the slightest of insults. It bubbled up in her and she couldn’t stop it even if she wanted to. In the red haze brought on by the anger, she didn’t want to. In her more lucid moments, when she could think past the red fog, she wondered what Elder Masaiyah was thinking, bringing a mirror into a lair for hatchlings. Cinna was a safety risk, a danger, and Masaiyah had welcomed her like a harmless spiral child. When Cinna’s mind was clearer than normal, she registered the confusion, the hope that maybe Masaiyah saw that she could be better than what her anger said she was. When Cinna’s mind was clouded, she only felt the resentment that Masaiyah had only taken her in when she’d been a baby, and now that she was fully grown and coming into her power and strength and the accompanying rage, Cinna would have to leave her home. Chie had wanted to leave, had done so already, had left Cinna alone- Cinna hadn’t followed her, even though- even though it’d be so easy and she could let her anger and strength run free unchecked, fight alongside her sister, her mirror image. She could fight- mirrors could always fight. But-

Cinna wanted to prove to Masaiyah that she could be something other than a fighter. The dancer Rosiliria was her idol, even though in her foggy mind she didn’t quite understand why. The pale pink splotches of the dancer’s scales, the way she swirled and twirled, the ribbons she wore fluttering in the self made breeze, her many wings stirring the air and raising herself to float in a gentle dance with the wind… Cinna was entranced. Even though she was an unholy terror, Rosiliria let her trail behind her, and even taught her some dance moves. Even so, Cinna was struggling to control her anger and lashed out so often, unable to hold her burning rage in, just so frustrated and pent up. Rosiliria was a graceful and sinuous spiral and Cinna’s claws never touched her; thank the Windsinger. But Rosiliria went to talk to Masaiyah and Cinna’s heart sank like a stone. This was the talk that would lead to Cinna leaving Magnolia, she’d overstayed her welcome, she was sure of it. When Rosiliria and Masaiyah came back to her, she was forlornly hiding under a bamboo cluster. She expected sternly kind words, the scroll in their hands to be a message to Bisera, to grant her a home in Chie’s new home. She didn’t expect their words to be fondly kind, the scroll in their hands to change her into a spiral like them, to offer her a way out of her predetermined path.

Cinna took the scroll without hesitation. A way to stay in her home, with her mother-figure Masaiyah, her admired idol Rosiliria, a way out of what fate had given her- she could never say no to it. The days following the change were the oddest- the red fog had lifted fully for the first time in her life and she could think as clear as a blue sky. Her body was longer and her wings were multiple- she fell over herself far too many times. But with Rosiliria’s guidance, she gained a grace she’d never even imagined. Rosiliria gave Cinna her own ribbons and lace and Cinna began to truly flourish. Now, she is the most skilled dancer in the whole of the lair. Her children, pure spiral and no hint of the rage she had once carried, she taught to them her most important lesson. No matter what fate has handed to you, no matter how heavy the burden, your fate is your own.

Cinna became aware of the Koi community when her travels led her to others with her patterns and colors. She was deeply interested in what it meant for her. Koi meant strength, it meant bravery and passionate love and harmony and perseverance. Red koi in particular signified matriarchal power and success in chosen careers. Graceful and powerful and overcoming obstacles in life, and when she heard that koi could also mean completing a life-changing transformation, she knew that she meant to be part of it. Despite the lean form of the spiral, she knew her own power had never diminished- her own bravery in facing unfavorable odds had never abated. She was passionate for her dances and grace was borne in her every step- she was the best dancer in the Cloudsong and she loved fiercely. She loved her sweet Prince and she loved her kindly baker and she would not choose between them. Being Koi became a point of pride with her. It became something of an assurance that everything that made her her was perfect. Of course, her self-confidence had never suffered but having a strong belief like that to bolster herself with was just nice to have.

Cinna read the myth of the koi, that they struggled for a hundred years to climb an impossibly tall waterfall, dragged down by demons of malice, and once they crested the waterfall, the koi were rewarded by the deities, given beautiful dragon bodies free from the trials they had to endure. Well, had she had doubts about joining the Koi, the story would've erased them all. Cinna found her smiles becoming so beaming that Arzani swooned on a near-daily basis. Yes, she loved her home and her mother-figure, and she loved her children and her lovers and her friends, and she felt it all so much more stronger, with that tiny little bit more reassurance that she was the way she was always meant to be. She knew it, of course she knew it, but it soothed the old hurts.
