Biography

Helio Firesand the Undying

tumblr_nr4pdbmimT1scno6po8_400.png

firev4.png Born into the realm of fire, Helio’s life began as any other dragon’s would: hatched from an egg surrounded by his parents and siblings. He grew quickly, strength, intelligence, and swiftness his gifts from the Flamecaller, and soon claimed for himself a position within the clan where he lived. It was not to last however. With the shifting tides of the lands of Sornieth, tragedy befell Helio’s clan. The lands shook with rage, fires consumed all that lived, and the place the Firesand Clan called home opened up under their feet, swallowing them in a mix of rock and flame, killing every last one of them.

When Helio woke, he was surrounded by darkness. He tried to move, but was met by solid walls on all sides. Unable to move much more than his claws and the tip of his tail, he resigned himself to his death, closed his eyes, and waited for the end.

Sometime later, Helio thought he heard voices, low murmurings he couldn’t quite make out. A feeling of relief washed over him and Helio reached out the little bit that he could, scratching at the walls of his prison, and crying out hoarsely, “I’m in here! Please, get me out! I still live!” The voices didn’t seem to hear him, yet they didn’t leave him either. Using that as a guide, Helio scratched at the walls of his prison, praying to the Flamecaller that she allow him to live long enough to breathe fresh air once again.

Finally, after was seemed like an eternity, Helio felt the walls of his tomb crack and he was able to push against the fissure, breaking free of the darkness and rolling tail over snout into the world. The landscape that met him was unknown to him, and Helio sat up, blinking into the evening sun. A wind was blowing, twisting bits of dirt, smoke, and ash into the air, and he shivered, not from the cold, but from being unable to recognize his own homelands.

“What’s this?” Behind him a voice spoke, and Helio twisted his head to look over his shoulder to peer up at the massive dragon. Helio had seen Imperial Dragons before, but he didn’t remember them being as large as the one that peered down at him with curious gold eyes. “Where did you come from, Little One?”

“There are egg pieces here,” a new voice replied. Helio turned toward it, this time seeing a huge Guardian with pieces of egg shell in her claws. Her eyes glowed the same as his and Helio turned his full attention to her.

“Where are we,” he asked. Remembering his manners, Helio bowed his head in apology. “Forgive me. My name is Helio of the Firesand Clan. Who might you be?”

“Firesand,” the Imperial asked. “The Firesand Clan was wiped out when the entirety of Sornieth shook. That’s impossible. Besides, how would a hatchling know such a thing?”

“I’m not a hatchling!” Helio stood, even though his legs were shaking and he felt weak. Opening his wings in defiance, he hissed at the Imperial. “I am Helio, Head of the Firesand Clan!”

“That’s not possible,” the Imperial countered, flicking the end of his tail. “We traveled passed where the Firesand Clan lived. There is nothing but a massive split in the land left.”

“I don’t believe you.” Helio turned from the Imperial back to the Guardian. Surely one born of the Flamecaller wouldn’t lie to him like the Light Born did.

“That was weeks ago. No one could have survived in the wreckage of the lands for that long.” The Guardian’s voice was low, but her eyes seemed to glow like embers with excitement. “Tell me, Helio of the Firesand Clan: if you truly were the leader, do you know of your Clan’s curse?”

“Curse? What curse? You have never mentioned any curse to me before, Ixen.” The Imperial snorted, rubbing a claw across his nose.

The wind howled in the silence that filled the air as the Guardian smiled, sharp teeth in a feral grin. “That’s because, my dear Trafalgar, the Firesand Curse is only a legend; something most Flame Born don’t even think is real, and not something the Firesand liked to put to the test.”

Helio tried to think back through the teachings of the Clan Elders. There had been brief mention of a great power that was passed down through those trueborn of the Firesand blood, but it was so long ago that no one knew for sure where the true bloodline was anymore. The power of never ending life, but it only awakened if the dragon was put to death through flame as the Flamecaller would have wanted. If they rose from the ashes, they were reborn and lived until such a death claimed them again; over and over in a never ending cycle until the end of time. Closing his eyes, Helio tipped his head back toward the sky and inhaled deeply. He knew that little tidbit of information and the curse these dragons spoke of was the same.

“Yes,” Helio replied quietly, feeling his heart pounding in his chest. He had never thought of it, had never entertained the idea of it before, but given the pieces and what Helio was able to remember, he knew deep down it was true. He was of the true bloodline and his death by flame had awakened that power from deep within him. “I know of what you speak.”

“Ah, I almost forgot. My name is Ixen.” The Guardian raised a claw to her own chest before gesturing to the Imperial. “And this is my mate, Trafalgar.” Helio looked up to her, finaling accepting the fact he was indeed a hatchling for the time being. The wind caused the bones about her to clink softly against one another and the flames of her candles flare with life. “What will you do, Helio the Undying,” the Guardian asked.

Undying. Helio thought the title over, not sure if it was one he was quite willing to accept yet or not. Ixen and Trafalgar watched him quietly, waiting for him to gather his thoughts and decide what it was he wanted to do. Helio was unsure of himself. He didn’t want to believe that his clan was gone, that he, himself, had survived, but somehow he knew it was true. Taking a deep breath, he wrapped his tail around his feet and sighed heavily. “I do not know.”

“Come with us.”

“Terk isn’t going to like that, Ixen.”

“She accepted me, Trafalgar.”

“That’s not what I meant and you know it. You know how she is with any new comer.”

“But she has never turned one away. We were meant to find Helio for a reason. I say he should come with us. You know what I speak of is true.”

Trafalgar was quiet before nodding. “Yes, I do.”

Helio looked from Ixen to Trafalgar then back to Ixen. “Where are we going,” he asked. “Where is it that you call home?”

Ixen smiled and Helio felt a shiver run down his spine. “A place far from here, on the edge of the Obscured Crescent in the Wispwillow Grove; deep in the lands the Shadowbinder calls home.”
