Biography

Narudar
[ nah-ROO-dar ]
"Temporary ally; an enemy's enemy"

Spare Material Analogous Pigment Blend Painted Turtle Shell

The Homunculus
[ OUTLANDER ]
@@
He tries on identities like an old coat, and tries to forget the ragged hole where his own never was.

The sorcerers' plan was subtle, brilliant, and utterly foolproof: they would create a duplicate of the princess, assassinate the original, and replace her with the double. They would become the most powerful people in the entire kingdom, ruling from the shadows with no one the wiser as to the true identity of their "princess."

Unfortunately for them and their grand designs, they didn't bother much with the particulars of the construct ritual they chose, and their magically created princess turned out to be, in fact, a magically created prince. He was also thoroughly uninterested in being a pawn in someone else's machinations.

- - -

Despite his magical birth, Narudar has no particular aptitude for a mage's spellwork. Rather, his skills lie in the realm of passive, innate Talents, and those skills make him a dangerous opponent indeed. Mimicry and deception are as natural to him as breathing, and he patiently played the part of a biddable construct as his creators fought amongst themselves over how best to salvage their botched plans. Distracted by their internal feuding, the sorcerers never even realized that their creation was doing some scheming of his own.

Narudar took full advantage of the opening they unwittingly left him, playing them at their own game far more skillfully than they had ever conceived of. Not one of them gave any thought to the simple, agreeable, half-forgotten homunculus that seemed to always be in the corners of every room, as collaboration turned to petty squabbling, secrecy turned to paranoia, and irritation turned to hatred. The pact's collapse was inevitable, and Narudar had his claws on all of the strings, manipulating tempers and egos to make the fallout as spectacular as possible.

When the end did come, it was almost disappointing in its swiftness. A pair of plotters attempted to complete a contested ritual without the group's knowledge, and Narudar made sure they were discovered at a critical moment. The confrontation immediately became violent, and the sorcerers' own web of interwoven wards, charms, and protection and defense spells all tripped at once, creating an overwhelming feedback loop that burned the magic out of every mage linked with the group. Such concentrated magical trauma could theoretically be survived by powerful, experienced mages, but magic-wielders of that caliber are also clever enough to set their wards in ways that do not cause feedback loops. Overconfident and inept as the sorcerers were, they had no protection from their own magic, and the entire pact fell dead on the spot.

- - -

And that was that. For the first time in his short life, Narudar was free to choose his own path. With nothing really better to do, he decided that he might as well introduce himself to the princess he was created to replace.

It remains to be seen how she will react to learning that she now has a brand-new younger twin.
