Biography

_______________
Mausi darted into the depths of the fir tree, heart thundering inside her narrow chest. Peekingout from the shadows, she flinched as The Mage looked directly at her. The bogsneak blinked her violet eyes slowly, before turning her back to Mausi.
The Family had hired The Mage to help ward their lair against the Beastclans’ encroachments. Her father, Calcifer, had warned Mausi not to interfere with The Mage’s work, lest the bogsneak turn Mausi into a toad. But Mausi couldn’t help herself. She had crept into one of the tiny tunnels that pocked the walls of their entryway before dawn each day so she could watch The Mage work.
Though they were an Arcane clan, The Family didn’t have any mages of their own. Everybody knew a handful of common, practical spells, but on the night of her arrival The Mage had shown Mausi what real magic could do.
“It’s a simple procedure,” The Mage had said, addressing the assembled members of The Family. “If you’d all please take a step back.”
Everyone had shuffled backwards, pressing their backs against the wall. Mausi had fluttered up above their heads, clinging to a lantern for a better view. Her brother lay spread eagle on the stone slab, breathing shallowly. A Beastclan arrow jutted from his collar, right above his heart. Mausi knew the adults had tried to wrest the arrow from his flesh, but it wouldn’t budge. Her brother’s screams had echoed through the lair. Dragons spoke in hushed whispers: the arrow was cursed, its dark magic consuming her brother’s life. He was dying.
The Mage leaned over his prone form, closing her eyes as if listening intently. Scratching a rune into the stone, a tangle of syllables spilled from her lips. For a moment, the world appeared more vibrant, colors more intense, sounds louder, smells stronger. Mausi could feel her bones growing, and taste her own tongue. Then the arrow disintegrated. The world faded back to normal. Her brother sighed, and began to snore.
“Bandage the wound,” The Mage instructed. Their healer hurried to comply. “He’ll sleep for a few days.”
A murmur went up from the crowd, and somebody began to weep. Grandfather shook The Mage’s hand, and lead her away. Mausi stared.
“I can see you little mouse.”
With a startled yipe, Mausi tumbled from her perch among the fir’s branches. The Mage lifted her effortlessly from the forest litter.
“Please don’t turn me into a toad,” Mausi said.
The Mage snorted.
“What is your name?” she asked.
“Mausi.”
“Mausi. I think I should return you to your parents.”
_______________
“Please!” Mausi squealed, twisting free of the bogsneak’s grasp. “Teach me! Nobody in The Family knows real magic.”
The Mage looked startled.
“Teach you magic?” she echoed.
“Like what you did with my brother,” Mausi said. “Like with the wards.” She perched on the bogsneak’s nose and peered into her violet eyes. “I want to be a mage. Like you.”
The bogsneak began to laugh. Shaking her head, she forced Mausi back into the air, where she hovered.
“Becoming a mage is not easy,” she warned. “It is often boring.”
“I don’t care! I will study every day,” Mausi promised. “I will practice, and practice, and practice!”
The bogsneak’s head listed to one side, and her eyes narrowed thoughtfully. Then she shook her head.
“If your parents agree,” the Mage said. “I will teach you one spell. One.” She raised a single claw in emphasis. “And if you complain, even once, then you must promise to stay with your family and let me leave.”
“I won’t complain,” Mausi said. “Never-ever-ever! What then?”
“Then you may ask your parents, and if they agree, I will take you on as my apprentice.”
Mausi somersaulted in mid-air, whistling with delight. She landed next to the bogsneak’s right foreleg and extended a tiny hand.
“We have a deal, mage.”
The mage chuckled, took her hand.
“You may call me Etherea,” she said.
They shook on it.
