Earthwatch

Before she became "Earthwatch", the young mirror went by the name of Ems. A skilled duelist and brutal adversary, she prided herself in leading raids against clans of other flights. Her bloodlust knew no bounds, and her ruthlessness would be her undoing. In a venture against the Glade, she exterminated an entire clan of dragons, going so far as to destroy even the unhatched eggs. However, in doing so, most of her own clan died in battle--and they were the lucky ones. The survivors suffered the Gladekeeper's wrath in the form of quicksand, carnivorous plants, and worse. One by one, were swallowed by the forest. For Ems herself the goddess reserved a special fate: with every step she took, her limbs stiffened and hide roughened, tendrils of green taking root in her very flesh. Yet even then, Ems was not deterred. She vowed to raise another clan and return to avenge her fallen kin.
Returning to Dragonhome however, she found no-dragon willing to take up her bloody cause. In desperation and in a haze of righteous fury at their cowardice, she made the journey to the Pillar itself. There she demanded an audience with the Earthshaker himself, and begged him to raise an army from the dust so that she might fulfill her vow. As she spoke, the muscles of her face and jaw grew hard and brittle, and her eyes began to lose their vibrance. The curse was almost complete, but Ems would not relent.
In that moment, she felt the spirits of her clan nearby, their whispering voices rising in earsplitting crescendo of grief and desperation.
CEASE AND BE STILL.
The command reverberated in Ems bones and teeth, echoed in the chambers of her heart.
YOUR CLANMATES SPEAK IN YOUR FAVOR, YET YOUR FATE IS WELL DESERVED.
Ems could not answer, her jaw and face turned to living wood.
FOR THEIR SAKES, YOU WILL LIVE.
Even as the words filled her being, she felt her muscles warm and blood begin to stir once more.
BUT NO LONGER WILL YOU RAMPAGE AND DESTROY. YOUR DEVOTION AND THE LOVE OF YOUR LOST CLAN HAVE SAVED YOUR LIFE, BUT ONLY INSOMUCH AS YOU DEVOTE YOUR LIFE TO THE LOVE OF OTHERS.
She tried to swallow, but found her throat still locked in wooden flesh.
GO FORTH. LIVE BETTER THAN YOU HAVE. OR RELINQUISH THE GIFT I HAVE BESTOWED ON YOU.
Slowly, halting and limping and gasping for breath, Ems trailed away from the Pillar. Over the next few months she found that with every kind or loving gesture, the green curse retreated, and with every bruise she inflicted, every wound she caused, the curse worsened. No-one in Dragonhome would give her shelter for fear of the Gladekeeper's wrath, so she was finally forced to travel abroad into the lands she used to pillage. At last she found the Hoard with its mercurial matriarch. These dragons were no strangers to strange curses, and took pity on her fate. Moreover, they found her strategic brilliance essential to their ongoing feud with the local beastclans.
