Footprint raised her head from her paws and glared towards the sound, her lips pulling back from her teeth. There were eggs in the nest she was curled around, and the familiar terrified anger started to rise up her throat. She crept to her feet, shuffled with agonising slowness over to the little noise. The packed dirt wall was crumbling as whatever it was tunnelled closer. Footprint tensed, balanced on her toes, and sprang, dug furiously into the wall, and snapped with her broken teeth in a desperate attack.
The little ember mouse squealed and thrashed as it hung from her mouth by its tail, and an Imperial stuck her head through the entrance. Footprint sniffed suspiciously, but she smelled like a grown up baby, and of the eggs in the nest.
“Footprint?” she said, “Oh.” She slid a little further forward, eyes on the mouse. “Is that someone’s familiar?”
Footprint broke its back with a molar and let it fall to the floor. The Imperial blinked.
“No pets in the nests,” said Footprint.
“…Alright.”
