______ Prancer made his way through the winding alleys of Starhaven, bag clutched firmly in in his claws. In it were the copies of the clan’s accounts for the past six months- one of many, in fact. He’d been up almost all night making a total of eight copies of everything; this set was for the clan leader Geiger, another for Killiac, and a third for Gadget. He wasn’t entirely certain that Gadget would so much as look at the thick packet of papers, or do anything other than use them for tinder in her forge, but she was an integral part of the clan. The fourth copy was for an outside auditor- this hadn’t been clan policy, but Prancer refused to take any chances. The rest were, well, just insurance, and his personal copies, stored in various safe places. Prancer knew full well that he’d just get laughed at for being this paranoid about it, but he refused to have a repeat of the circumstances that had brought him to Starhaven.

His old clan back in the Tangled Wood hadn’t been kind to him, and he didn’t want his new one to go the same way. It was the kind of thing that kept him up at night, anxiety firing on all his neurons. It made him unable to stop himself from imagining the same thing over and over again; the bills and account books being taken when money went missing even though he knew he’d never touched a cent of it. He’d sworn up and down, but even when he tried to find proof, there- there hadn’t been. And no one had believed him. It still made him shudder to think about, and he had to shake himself out of it now; the old panic was rising up yet again, burning the back of his throat and making his limbs go numb and distant as it roared in his head. It didn’t matter now, he told himself firmly. He was trustworthy, and he was going to prove it to Geiger. He knew that she’d taken a risk hiring him to be the Clan treasurer; even if he’d been in Starhaven for nearly four years now, there were still some members who still thought of him as a newcomer, or an outsider. It didn’t mean that they didn’t like him, since they were perfectly polite, but Prancer always worried about what they thought, or if they would convince everyone to kick him out. He hated even thinking about it.

______ Prancer paused in front of Geiger’s lair, resisting the urge to fidget more and double check the message he’d received as his summons. He was definitely in the right place, even if he was about five minutes early. Just to be safe. He didn’t want to mess up and be late; that would be catastrophically bad. He was competent, and he needed to prove it. Prancer began to run through the explanation he’d practiced, murmuring quietly to himself. He’d go through the budget for last year, how much was spent and how much had been gained, make suggestions for this year, answer any questions about taxes (yes, they could be raised a bit, but they would be comfortable enough without it).

“Treasurer,” a formal voice announced, nearly right in front of him. It was almost enough to make Prancer drop everything he was holding, and what followed with a kind of ungainly scramble to catch it. His cheeks burned, his tail swishing a little and wings folding inwards in embarrassment. He looked up, a little sheepishly, to see Geiger waiting in front of him. Oh, dear.

“I’m- uh, sorry to keep you waiting,” he replied, a little too quickly. His eyes darted to the side.
“You weren’t, don’t worry. Now, do come in- we have quite a lot to discuss, right?” The clan leader waited a beat, before she turned. Obligingly, Prancer followed her into her lair, clutching his papers tightly. His claws were only shaking a little, but they wouldn’t rip the delicate material. He’d had nightmares about that, a few days ago. It was part of why he’d made so many copies, too.

He cleared his throat, once Geiger was settled, the fire to her back. It cast a warm light around the office. It had been cold, the last time he’d been in this position. It was raining outside. Prancer set the papers on her desk carefully, not wanting to accidentally knock them or anything else over. While she pored over them, he began his explanation, just as outlined. It was all going perfectly, even if he stumbled over a few of his words, but- Geiger didn’t seem to mind it. It helped that she was focusing more on the numbers than him, clearly working things out on her own. His front paws shook a little. What if she found a mistake, what if he’d done something wrong, missed a number or a calculation or-

He cut off mid-sentence, heart beating fast and eyes wide. He couldn’t remember what he was supposed to say, and Geiger looked at him, puzzled. His breath came fast and shallow, and he had to remind himself to take slow, deep ones instead. The office is warm. He’s checked his work. She hasn’t pointed anything out. He’s checked his work. Geiger doesn’t say anything, until the room settles back into focus around him.

______ ”Sorry,” he managed to whimper out, his voice a little too shaky for his liking. “I didn’t- I got caught up in thinking, and it was bad, and I know I didn’t make any mistakes but what if I did, I promise that I didn’t mean to or anything, it was an honest accident and I’ll redo everything if that’s the case-,”

“Prancer,” Geiger said, her voice smooth and firm. “It’s okay. These seem to be perfectly in order, and everything is clearly written out. If the auditor says anything about it, then we’ll talk, but- you don’t need to worry.”

His shoulders slowly untensed, little by little, and he let out a slow breath. The reassurance meant more than he could articulate to her.

“Now,” she said, her voice gentling a little. “Can we continue? You were just explaining this little graph, where it shows how the budget is portioned out.”

“Yes. Yes, of course,” he replied instantly, straightening up a little. He kept Geiger’s reassurance very firmly in mind, repeating it almost like a mantra when he felt himself slipping up again, over elaborating and worrying and apologizing in advance. He didn’t need to worry. He didn’t need to worry.

He would be safe here, and he didn’t have to worry. Everything was in order.
