Biography
Dragon belongs to @QuotetheRaven
Benthic rules the deep, a ruthless king in one of the most harsh and forbidding domains of Sornieth. Though an omnipotent being, even Benthic cannot be expected to supervise every sector of the alien world he commands. Thus, the god appointed stewards, each a minor deity of their respective oceanic division.
Abyssal is one of those stewards, the overseer of the zone to which she's given her name. The abyssal zone is dark and deep, shallower only than the overseer Hadal's kingdom, a land of eternal midnight and mystery, roamed only by invertebrates. Abyssal's realm is likewise consumed by darkness, but she is not as hostile to life as Hadal—or Benthic, for that matter. She experiments with life, makes towering hydrothermal vents rise from the barren landscape of her kingdom, and allows organisms to flourish in an environment most would have deemed a lost cause.
Her creations are monsters by typical standards, but the unusually kindly goddess loves them unconditionally, believing them champions of life for successfully colonizing such an unforgiving realm. Where Benthic seeks only to pull dragons down to his stygian domain, Abyssal accepts her place and creates life adapted to a world of perpetual night.
In draconic mythos, Benthic is widely credited with the creation of all deep-sea life. Draconic mythos is mistaken. Each overseer deity is the source of life in their dominion, Abyssal included. It is she who shaped anglerfish and ghostly squid, tube worms of the vents that sway in the current, and all other unworldly beasts that lurk in the depths of Sornieth's seas. Each and every one she regards as a triumph, no matter how bizarre in appearance or lifestyle.
Considering how hostile her environment is, Abyssal's clemency is surprising. However, this makes her more venerated than most of the other stewards, and is even prayed to more frequently in certain regions than Benthic.
The Water dragonflight regards her as a benevolent goddess of survival, one who encourages the blossoming of life in places where it would seem nearly impossible. Dragons regularly sacrifice to Abyssal alongside her fellow stewards, although Benthic is prioritized in religious ceremonies due to his eminence.
- Abyssal is the patron goddess of the Abyssopelagic Zone.
- In mythology, she is portrayed as far kinder than her superior. In one myth, she turns a dead dragon found sinking into her domain into an octopus instead of letting it fall into Hadal or Benthic's clutches.
- Her sacred animal is the dumbo octopus
- Her sacred item is a delver's lamp.
- Abyssal is mostly worshiped by Water clans, specifically those that make their homes in the Leviathan Trench. Clans located within her zone are especially devoted to appeasing her.
