PYRE - Phoenix

After a thousand lifetimes, Pyre fears nothing.

Once, when he was young, there was much that scared him. He feared the ocean deep, the stars above. He feared spiders and shadows and snakes altogether. And he feared death most of all. All other things that he feared were hypothetical at best, but death? Death had struck early in his life, claiming his father in the dead of night.

Pyre knew only that his father was lively one day and gone the next, left an empty husk on the cold ground. The knowledge that life was only fleeting was terrible in the worst way, and though he did not yet have a legacy to worry about, he worried all the same. Would he be forgotten after his death? Was there anything on the other side? It was a terrible state of limbo to consider, a gnawing anxiety that picked at his bones, wore him hollow. Pyre lost a great deal of weight after his father died, and he withdrew from the world. Already a scared young dragon, there was now even more to avoid.

His family helped him outgrow it in time. His mother and many siblings had the courage he so desperately longed for, and he drew on their strength whenever he could, grateful for their lasting support. They taught him how to face his fears one by one, taught him how to look the world in the eye and admit he was afraid before marching forward all the same.

But still, they could not break his fear of death, and when death finally came, Pyre wept.

It was a fiery death, and a mistake at that. The summer had been dry and the storms had been vicious. Lightning tore open the sky, and despite the rain, the earth caught fire and the winds whipped the embers into a frenzy. He tried to flee, but walls of fire surrounded him, and the howling storm threw him back to earth every time he tried to fly. There was no escape in sight, and while his family got away, Pyre burned.

There should have been nothing left but ash. Any other dragon would have been nothing but a fragment of their clan's history after such a calamity. But as the fires died and the scorched earth cooled, there stirred in the ashes a fledgling Skydancer. Pyre had been reborn.

His mother and siblings rejoiced, glad to have him alive and well, even if he had been through a curious sort of rebirth. He was still their dear brother, his mother's dear son, and if he was young again, new growth after the raging burn, then so be it. But it was hard to start over, to conquer his fears once again, and it only grew harder with time. He was always too warm to keep close contact with anyone, his feathers radiating unbearable heat. To spare his family the discomfort, Pyre shied away and tried to keep the fire in his bones to himself. But without them, it was so much harder to face the new fears that arrived, and the old ones that remained. He remembered every moment of his death in the storm, and whenever thunder rolled or lightning flashed, he felt himself ripping away from the present, tumbling back into those helpless moments when the fire consumed him whole. He was more afraid of death than ever, and less prepared to face his fears.

Worse yet, his mother died. She was old and lived well, so it was her time, but that hardly eased the blow. Pyre mourned beside his siblings, and he lit the funerary flames with his own blazing touch.

He would be the fire-bearer for many more funerals to come, too. He would light his own more than once, only to rise from the ashes more weary than before, and in-between his deaths, he would set his siblings ablaze on their way to whatever afterlife awaited. One by one, his family died of every cause imaginable, and Pyre eventually became the last.

Alone after that, he tried to find new family. He longed to be a part of something again. But every time he came close, time ripped his loved ones away, and he simply rose from the flames, an old soul growing older in a body never old enough.

Death and rebirth have left him numb, stripping away his hopes and fears alike. There is no sense in living to the fullest anymore; he's lived through all life has to offer. Nothing is new, nothing is novel, and he is deeply, terribly alone.

Maybe one day, he will reach his final death, one he will welcome after all these centuries. Maybe he will burst into flames, and the ash will cool for the last time. But for now, he simply exists, drifting through the world without aim. He fears nothing anymore.
