Biography

Note: latter half of lore has heavy focus on Soh, a dragon who is no longer her permamate.
Need to update lore, probably never will.

Raised in a band of traveling alchemists, Cerula had magic running through her veins since she was born. Cerula's mother had bargained with the Flamecaller to obtain a superior flame that set apart the alchemists from their competition. However, the bargain came with a price. Cerula was born on fire, and it would never go out. As a child, it was already evident that she would grow up to be devastatingly beautiful. The village boys in the towns her parents traveled into would try to nip a kiss, only to have their lips and mouth burned. When Cerula was an adolescent, she burned down half of the troupe's caravans, causing severe injuries to those inside. The rest of the alchemists demanded that she be sent away, for she was too dangerous. Her parents refused. The rest of the alchemists came together to make a heavy, bulky flame retardant suit, which they ordered her to wear at all times. And so Cerula persisted, quietly miserable.

After the incident, Cerula withdrew into herself. Her only family, the troupe, despised her. She would often not emerge out of her family's caravan for weeks at a time. She watched out of the window as town after town sped by, her heart aching when she saw the troupe's limping and discolored children playing outside. As the troupe grew in size and newcomers questioned why there were so many disfigured dragons, Cerula became close to a cryptic. The only times she went outside were at night, when everyone else was sleeping. She would pick at the padlock over the neck of her suit and shed it to fly free along the moon.

Cerula thought of herself as a curse. She became a tale associated with her troupe, and sometimes villagers would stay outside at night to try and catch a glimpse of the lumpy, hazard-suit chrysalis turn into a beautiful butterfly. Cerula's parents, facing ostracization and shame, let her steal away and go to distant places. Life was easier for them without her around. She began asking them for funds so she could take trips for weeks at a time, stopping by a trading post before setting out into the wilderness. Where she couldn't hurt anyone.

Only too glad to have the suit off, Cerula packed it in her bag and flew over the most scenic views she could find. Giant forests, beds of coral, yawning canyons. Sometimes she would see dots in the distance, places where the air was teeming with dragons. Cerula would always steer clear of those places. Hundreds of miles, and Cerula's face was the only dragon in a vast emptiness.

Cerula was flying over a petrified forest when she saw a band of colorful coatls, sparring with flying lights. Entranced, she hid and watched them. They were alchemists, like her, and they were fighting by turning air particles into energy! Cerula was awful at gas transformations, but that was beside the point. These were the first dragons she had seen up close in a very long time. But she wasn't careful enough, and her when it began to rain, she had no cover. The band of coatls heard the persistent sizzling sound as she scrambled to hide, and found her elegant form curled up high in the boughs of a naked tree.

The first coatl to fly up to her was a bright-eyed man with a bounce in his step and a cocky smile. Cerula recognized him as the best duelist that she was observing before. He demanded an answer as to why she was spying on them. By this time, Cerula's fire had been suppressed enough that he didn't notice her anomaly. When she couldn't provide an answer, he challenged her to a duel. Shakily she tried to decline, but the band of coatls ganged up around her, and without her fire, she had to way to repel them.

____As they fought, advanced incantations began dusting themselves off after months of disuse. Cerula couldn't dodge his attacks well because of her size, but her magic was much more powerful than his. He sent out a particularly powerful gust of energy that hit her over the heart and she fell, half paralyzed. He stepped over her and demanded that she surrender. Just then, the squall stopped. Cerula's eternal fire sprung back over her in a brilliant explosion of vengeance.

Blinded, he stumbled back as the rest of his troupe watched her, slack jawed. She towered over him fiercely, and flung him across the clearing with a gust of monumental energy. He was unconscious before he hit the dirt. There was a silence. Then, the coatl gang began applauding fiercely. "Soh needed someone to knock him down a few pegs!" one of them exclaimed.

Cerula blushed fiercely, and fell to her knees in exhaustion. "Don't touch me," she said weakly. The last thing she remembered was the feeling of cool air rushing over her.

Cerula awoke to find herself in the coatl's den, a network of caves deep underground. Terrified of hurting them, she pressed herself into a corner and refused to come out. The coatls coaxed her out eventually, and left her be as she began acclimating to being around dragons once again.

Cerula stayed with them for what she only thought would be weeks. Weeks stretched into months. She began learning everyone's names. She helped them brew potions, her specialty. Still skittish but not as willowy, Cerula's barriers were slowly eroding around the coatls. Her opponent, Soh, came by to concede and apologize to her. They soon struck up a friendship based on teasing and barbs. Cerula was happy.

She grew closer to Soh over the course of her stay. He had charm, effusion, and an unexpected tenderness. One night as they were sitting on the lip of the cave, looking up at the stars, he asked her how she came to be covered in flames. She clammed up at first, then told him about the curse through a clenched jaw. She told him about it all that night, about the misfortune she caused her troupe, about her late night wanderings, about the hatred her band of travelers felt towards her. Soh listened as she poured out her soul. He wept with her, and they leaned on each other heavily that one teenage summer night.

Eventually, they became mates. Soh pledged himself to her, and she did the same. They were both adults now, ready to venture out into the world and make a life for themselves. Cerula knew Soh had dreams to become a successful alchemist, and so did she. They traveled around Sornieth for a decade, eventually becoming one of the most notable alchemist pairs in the history of the Scarred Wasteland. They've co-authored over 100 studies on the properties of elements and transfigurations, and Soh is credited with the industry-changing discovery of a substance that causes extreme heat resistance. Now they've settled down in the Dewshine Keep, and run their own successful business in all things alchemy.
