A Child of

Vaille and Bering’s children have the best of both worlds; progeny of an unmagical manuscript illuminator (albeit with a powerfully gifted heritage) and a profoundly magical part-golem weather-witch, they are given all the opportunities which their parents lacked. Depending on aptitude or inclination, their children are raised at sea or on land, schooled in academia or magical arts, even meteorological sciences. Bering’s ongoing experimentation with magic and the natural world may lead to some… peculiarities in her hatchlings, but they are all raised equally with love. Polgara was born with the unusual ability to sense- and affect- magnetic fields. She can always tell where she is in Sornieth, down to the most uncanny detail, and so she grew up utterly obsessed with maps and navigation. It's just as well she's got this in-built mapping ability, because every sensitive metal around her will gradually twist and warp, including compasses.

At the turn of the Second Age of Lucanidae, the clan's movement from the Everbloom Gardens to the Shrieking Wilds brought the clan into contact with an ever-growing throng of travellers and explorers. Many were outpaced and out-adventured by the elders of the clan who were known for their travels, such as Meridia, and many would keep their contact and association with the clan very brief and continue briskly on their way. Polgara was one of the first adventurers who would lay down foundations - her 'home base' in the clan is known to all members, even the younger ones, as a place of intrigue and excitement. Where dragons like Meridia might only keep notes in a stuffy old book about the more intriguing aspects of their travels, Polgara usually has visually captivating artefacts dotted all over. For this reason she would come to be much-loved by the growing youngsters of the clan and would find herself further anchored and rooted to her home base there, in spite of all her instincts telling her she must leave to continue her explorations of Sornieth.

She came to be known as The Expeditioner for precisely this reason - her travels continued to be extraordinary and outlandish, but they began to take on the form of an expedition, where the goal of destination was reached, the goal would then always be to make a return to her home base of Lucanidae. Over time, she developed a close relationship with Xenakis, the Loremaster, who would often request that she allow stories of her travels to be dictated and transcribed for him.
