As you hurry through the darkened forest, you scold yourself: What in the world made you decide to have this excursion during the night? In the end, none of this will really matter, as you will be welcomed into a room at the inn, with a bowl of stew and some bread.
Suddenly, you pause. You heard something, but what? The bushes and trees seem to grow mightier as you stare at them, and you realize that they completely cover the sky. You are trapped in a dome of vines and dark tree trunks.
Just as you are thinking of making a cowardly run for it, you hear the beast. It howls somewhere in the inky nothingness, and although the leaves are everywhere, the sound is clear and pure. And hungry. A dry wind stirs a few dead leaves from the ground. You're frozen with fear, and when you see the bushes tremble violently, the last thing you see is the monster with its claws and wild eyes lunging at you.
They never found your body in one piece.
You awake in your bed and realize that you are sweating uncontrollably. The sheets are tangled around you. The window is open, the curtains flapping, and your dog is growling and writhing on the floor, no doubt having one of his nightmares.
