Winter was about to arrive to the Windswept Plateau and all around, dragons and mammals alike scurried to gather up their supplies in preparation for the coldness. Many prepared to migrate to warmer places. The last few nests hatched and the hatchlings were bundled into warm scarves, ready to go with their parents. Not all nests hatched on time. Wind parents had a limit on how long they could wait, and one nest just happened to make a couple run out before it could hatch. Soon, the Plateau was deserted. Flags and kites hovered in the sky, tethered mournfully to their tree stumps and bamboo poles. The late nests hatched, finally, but they had no parents to look after them. One hatchling crawled into the world, along with his sister, and found a dreary, empty world. For days, they wandered through the territory, sniffing curiously at burrows and attempting to fly. It so happened that a young Skydancer was flying back over to the Plateau because she had forgotten her knitting needles. They were her favorite pastime and weapons, and she was still furiously berating herself for having left them behind. When she saw two hatchlings curled up on the ground, a few feet from where her home had been, she forgot entirely and came to cautiously check on the hatchlings. They were bone thin and shivering. The Skydancer curled her wings around them and looked around, anxiously wondering if she could find food somewhere. Her family would be wondering where she was, but these hatchlings didn’t need to die just so her mother wouldn’t rant at her. As dawn approached, she realized that crows had begun circling around them. Soon, the vultures would come, and then the hungry mammals. They sensed weakness from halfway across the Plateau, and in the winter finding food was hard enough. The Skydancer had befriended the hatchlings by then, and had named them Nyx and Crowflight. With a reluctant shrug, she picked up her needles and the hatchlings, and flew them towards the Tangled Wood where her family was vacationing, dropping them off at different Clans and quickly leaving. She’d forget about them soon enough. Crowflight was found in the morning, with a few feathers sticking out of his head. His new Clanmates assumed they were crow feathers, and kept his name Crowflight. However, they were really the feathers of his Skydancer savior... not that he remembers what she looks like now. |
