The first creation of an unknown dragon on the edge of the Hewn City, in a workshop in the basement of an abandoned building.
Spent his whole life chained in his room, the only glimpse of the outside world being through a small hole in the roof, through which sunlight poured.
Knew he was not the only creation locked away in the workshop, but didn't dare ask about the others. The one time he questioned the creator, they threatened to remove his vocal components.
One day, the creator released him from his chains and gave him the order to protect the workshop while the creator was on an extended trip. Nothing was to be allowed in or out of the workshop.
He maintains this order for several weeks before curiosity overwhelmed him and he goes outside for the first time.
The first thing he sees is cold and white and turns to liquid in his hands. He spends some time playing with the snow.
He would go outside daily, watching with a childlike wonder as the world changes over the week when he realised that the cold and snow were temporary.
One day, shortly after the snow melted, he encountered something he had never seen: a small green bump, pushing its way out of the ground. Then another appears, and another, then many, covering the ground and ever winding their way up buildings.
Completely fascinated, he spent hour after hour just watching the little green things grow and change...unaware that he was, in turn, being watched.
Eventually he decides he wants to bring one of the little things inside, but the moment he pulls one from the ground, a sharp snap of teeth and a loud snarl causes him to freeze. Then the plants start to move, shimmering veins of purple and black running through them as they grow to vast lengths, and when he sees something shifting in the shadows, he bolts back to the workshop.
It's several days before he works up the courage to go back outside. When he does, the change is shocking: the area is nearly completely covered in plant life. And out of the corner of his eye, he glimpses crystal green scales as the interloper strides calmly through them, oblivious to the machine dragon.
When the intruder notices him again, it reacts with aggression, snarling and hissing as the plants around it once again begin to writhe. But this time Rivai does not run: instead, he greets the dragon, apologizing for harming the plants before. This was apparently not the reaction that was expected, if the smaller dragons look of confusion is any indication. Instead of attacking, it tells him to go away and disappears into the foliage.
Rivai encounters the dragon several more times, and the interaction is always the same as that second time, until the day when he spies the other tenderly caring for newly emerged flowers. He asks if the other would teach him how to care for them so well, too.
The smaller dragon is extremely surprised by this request, but it reluctantly begins to show him how to care for the plants, it's enthusiasm growing with each word.
Rivai finds the small skydancers genuine love for nature to be incredibly charming, and though he does not know the name of the feeling for many years, he finds himself falling in love with the gardener. Despite never knowing his name.
A few months later, Rivai awakes to go meet his friend for a lesson, but the moment he leaves the workshop he knows something is wrong. The plants are dead.
When he reaches the clearing the gardener claimed as his own, all that's left is a pile of rotting plants, ash and the twisted skeletony of an unknown dragon.
Rivai is devastated by this apparent loss, but as he turns to leave, he spots a little ray of hope. A single bud, untouched by whatever had purged that place. Using the skull of the remains as a makeshift plant pot, he carries the tiny survivor back home. A few days later, the creator returns.
The creator is jubilant. Finally, after months of searching, they have found a clan interested in buying their "wares", as they describe Rivai and their other creations. And a few days later, a small group of dragons arrive.
The creator shows Rivai off to them as "perfect" and "a masterpiece". Rivai says nothing as they poke and prod, hoping only that the creator wouldn't find his little plant.
Then the creator invites them to see another project, a "suit". Rivai hears the group go into another room, hears his creator encouraging someone to "try it on". He hears mechanical clicking and grinding, the impressed murmurs of the visitors...
He hears the first crack, the first protesting screech of metal, the first snap of bolts being sheared clean
Silence.
Then he hears the screams.
Rivai does not learn what happened that day, after the chorus of screams and shouts and curses, but he sees what it does to the creator. The creator before was diligent, passionate, strict but fair. Now they are none of those things, now they are bitter, broken, often inebriated.
But above all, they are cruel.
Before that day, though they were not allowed to interact in the presence of the creator, he could still hear the others, listened as they laughed and sang and dreamed about the outside. Sometimes he joined in.
But now all he hears is their cries, their pleas for mercy, their screams as their creator punishes them for an imagined crime. As they are taken apart.
One day the creator comes to him, completely inebriated, and proceeds to fawn over him, how he is the only perfect creation and all the rest complete failures.
Then they see the flower, blooming in all of its dark glory.
When they ask where it came from, Rivai does not lie. For a moment they are silent, then they leave. Only to return with their tools and a strange staff, a staff that sends chill through the metal serpent.
The staff is pressed into his side, and for the first time Rivai feels pain as the electricity courses through him, locking most of his joints into place as he crashes to the floor.
As the creator begins to rip him apart, they berate him, that he is no better than the rest of the failures, and so he shall die. But Rivai does not feel fear. He feels something he had never felt before: hatred.
In a show of defiance, he manages to strike the creator with his tail, the only part of him not paralyzed, sending the dragon crashing across the room, near to Rivai's beloved bloom.
The creator is furious, and Rivai can hear them as they go to destroy his plant, unable to even turn to see it one last time. There is the sound of smashing bone, then...a strange noise, so soft he barely hears it, like something cut through the air. Then the gurgling, followed by a thump.
After the thump, a strange shuffling noise occurs as something moves into his vision. First a small green tendril tipped in red, then a leaf covered body, finally eyes, concealed within the bloom he had so long tended. The little creature sits with him until his joints unlock and he can finally move. But he is in bad shape and knows he needs to flee, quickly.
He barely gives his fallen creator a second glance as he bundles the little creature into his arms and stumbles down the silent corridor and out into the moonlit city. Not stopping until he is far beyond the ancient citadel and lost into the tangled woods.
He wanders aimlessly for days, eventually collapsing at the edge of a misty garden. He does not expect to awaken again, but indeed he does...to a sight he never thought he'd see again: the face of the skydancer he loved.
The skydancer helped him to repair himself and invited him to stay in Tunis new place, an invitation he gladly took up. The pair live happily on the edge of the Cimmerian lands, along with their "daughter", the Creeping Tendril they named Hope.
Feels incredibly guilty about leaving his kin behind and pledged to return for them when he is in better shape.
Since his face barely moves and his voice is a near constant monotone, the best way to tell how he's feeling is to listen to the ticking noise his "heart" makes: a steady rhythmic tick means he's happy, a slow tick means fear or sadness, a rapid tick means anger (to be expanded).
Has problems with things being broken or taken apart, to the point where it causes extreme anxiety.
