Lankester is the messiah his religious order has awaited for centuries...and he's really hoping no one finds out.

In one of the darker corners of the Ashfall Waste there is a small cult dedicated to what they call "The True Caller." This cult, known by a few as "Second Callers," believe that the Flamecaller who emerged from the shattered World Pillar was not the original Flamecaller at all, but an impostor. They teach that this "False Caller" stole the place of their true god in the pantheon through devious means, and that it is their holy mission to bring the True Caller back into the world. Their strategies for this range from aggressive door to door brochure campaigns to attempted deicide.

It's probably a good thing that the cult is small, and even their most ambitious mass sacrifices have less of a scorched Earth effect than they'd like. The Second Caller leaders will preach for hours on the evils of the False Caller, but the image they paint of the True Caller is, if anything, even more frightening. They believe the original Caller cared nothing for the energy, industry, and metal-forging that so characterize the Fire Flight today, and instead wanted nothing more than to watch the world burn. They sing of continent-spanning bonfires that will bring all of life together in an all-consuming blaze, of dragonkind becoming one in light and ash. They believe the sun and all the other stars were once planets like theirs who earned the "divine bliss" of eternal burning through service to their goddess. They also believe if the True Caller is returned to her rightful place, those stars will never stop burning, and the heat death of the universe will never come.

Lankester was raised in the faith of the Second Caller, one of many young dragons who saw themselves groomed into soldiers against universal entropy. He always liked being a Second Caller. He thought the church barbecues and sermons would always be there to satisfy his earthly desires until, he prayed, the day he would happily be consumed by the fire of his goddess reborn. He spent a lot of time handing out brochures, and even more time attending the barely-competent summoning parties thrown by his peers.

Lankester grew up to be an earnest, awkward dragon with an anxious streak and a particularly colorful vocabulary when startled. His cultmates would describe him as "nice," but would probably struggle to elaborate on that description if pressed. He was few people's best friend, and nobody's great love, but he was the kind of guy who could be counted on the reliably pick up soda for the cult's Movie Night.

Somewhat timid, but very dedicated to his faith, he'd always worked hard studying summoning techniques and theorizing on where the lost Caller could be hidden. When he reached adulthood he was given the title of High Searcher, one of the church's posts of honor.

The problem arose when Lankester went through something of a crisis of faith. When searching for new clues to the True Caller's whereabouts, most non-cult mages Lankester consulted dismissed his beliefs as crazy. In the face of mounting evidence that Lankester's work would never bear fruit, he began to doubt. Desperate to hang onto his flickering faith, he poured everything he had into five frantic months of intense spell preparation.

Lankester was desperate to not lose his identity as a Second Caller, and in later days he had to wonder if this fear was what finally gave the horrible god a toehold in the world. He saw himself as inseparably linked to the idea of the True Caller, and when he completed the summoning ritual, he found that he had unwittingly offered himself as a vessel for her. The goddess had been found, and had taken up residence in his body. From that day on a fire of literally biblical proportions burned, barely contained, in his frail mortal shell. These days his prayers are answered not by silent spiritual feelings, but by the hissing, spitting whispers of the goddess raging within his mind.

However, the goddess Lankester summoned was not quite what he expected. For one, he's not entirely sure she has ever taken the form of a dragon or the title of "Flamecaller." He can't tell if she hung the stars in the sky, but she does seem very keen on setting the planet ablaze. Yet instead of what the preachers called "a beautiful blazing oblivion designed to bring all energy in the universe into sync" she describes as simply a purposeless expression of pure violence. The voice in his head seems ungrateful for all the adoration his cult has given her, and she doesn't know even a single one of their hymns. All she wants is for Lankester to unleash the power he carries behind his ribs like a pulsing sun.

Now Lankester lives a life conflicted. On the one hand, he's done what he always wanted to do, and has the capacity to fulfill the ultimate purpose of his divine calling! On the other hand, his god is kind of ruining the vibe. Should he burn the world anyway, even if the deity doing it sees it as an act of malice instead of salvation? Should he tell his fellow Second Callers that their god is actually a jerk? Or should he just keep quiet, and let everyone go on trying to summon a god who was, unbeknownst to them, just at their Thursday Potluck as Lankester's invisible +1?

For now, he's chosen the last option, but the constant angry voice in his head has pushed him to seek other alternatives. He convinced his cult to let him go on a "Mission Trip" to the House of Echidna, where they think he is converting the mages of Echidna's coven to their faith. In reality, he's hoping the House holds a way for him to send the "True Caller" (or whatever she is) back to where she came from...

...or, perhaps, for him to become the kind of monster his friends want him to be.
