Biography
Trickster - Ghostwriter - Paper Fox
|
There is a game children play. They open a window, fill a piece of paper with characters, rest their fingers on a coin, and ask for "Kokkuri-san" to come and answer their questions. Their coin will move, tracing messages, usually because one or more of the children is the one directing it. But not always. Kokkuri-san is a mostly friendly fox-like spirit, providing school children with the gentle scares and thrills they go looking for when they reach out for the other side. He thinks of his ghostly messages as a kind of harmless prank to play on mortals, though like all pranks they can get out of hand. He never sets out to hurt anyone, but he clearly thinks making a child cry is an acceptable risk for the sake fun and games. After all, he knows even at his worst he's far less terrifying than anything else lurking on his side of the veil. A spirit can do a lot with a willing vessel seeking answers, asking an unseen force to guide their hand, leaving window and mind open for any to enter. Better he answers, and risks the tears. In the past, Kokkuri-san only had the power to trace out riddles for schoolchildren. But with each summoning their power grew, becoming more and more tangled with the magic of paper and letters, with the way humans allowed their minds to connect with ink on a page. Eventually they became strong enough to slip into places that were never intended for them. They found they could now touch hands that were writing novels, songs, term papers, and sympathy cards. They could enter any space where ink met paper, invited or not. He sometimes made his presence obvious, how could he resist? He watched from behind a veil of words as startled writers dropped pens that had suddenly scrawled a question or joke or threat that had never crossed their mind. It was fun, but it usually ended with his messages erased, scratched away, or crumpled in trashcans. So he also took a more subtle approach at times, to ensure his words would last. He lent his wit to writers, his poetry to love letters, his malice to scorned exes. He felt his heart beat across a hundred pages, and was pleased. With every word, he grew stronger still. There are books in the House of Echidna's library so old and magical that Kokkuri-san began hear the very fibers of their pages calling out to them. They found that the magic-drenched paper, the powerful runes traced in ancient ink, offered them a vessel more open to control than any they'd known before. Kokkuri-san twisted the pages, shaped them with word and will, and made themself an origami body all their own. They reveled in this new form, from its inkstained paws to its delicate vellum wings. They had no voice, except that of gesture and the written word, but now the hand they moved was all their own. For the first time they could take credit for their jokes, could be the one asking questions, could really know the people around them. For the first time they could be seen, without being scratched out. He quickly became popular at the House of Echidna, with his pranks and stories delighting dragons and dragonets alike. He's an energetic presence in the House, zipping through rooms and bursting from books like open doors. He's often one of the first faces to greet new residents and give them handy lists of House rules and warnings (and maybe some light hazing.) His powers also come in handy when members of the House need to send messages to distant dragons, which has made him particularly close with the frequently-travelling Dullahan. Recently the House's resident author, Ouija, has been spending a lot of time with Kokkuri-san, though they're not sure why. Maybe she has writer's block? She likes to hand them notes as they zip around the library, and they always return the favor. It's an unconventional way to be penpals, but Kokkuri-san is not complaining. Yet it does sometimes seem like there's something hidden between the lines that they're missing... The winged fox made of paper and ink still occasionally guides mortal hands unseen (it's still extremely funny to watch them react). But now he knows there's a place he can go home to, a place where the window's always open.
