Tourmaline was hatched in the Starfall Isles, in a nest firmly situated in the Focal Point. His first breaths were of air so thick with magic it made his little head spin. It was intoxicating, and he was immediately hooked. From a young age he buried himself in his magical studies alongside his equally zealous classmates, studying the tomes of The Arcanist and learning under the wings of his teachers. His work was high-quality, his research impressed his elders, and he rose to the top of his classes with a smug smile on his face as he was showered in praise. "A gifted hatchling," they would say, "So intelligent!" He loved the feeling of being superior to his classmates, a thrill reinforced with every grade he received. There is only so much new research one can do in the Starfall Isles, however. Many dragons before him had already devoted their lives to these studies, so new topics for new papers began were becoming sparse - especially for someone who wanted their work to stand apart from the rest. He would spend hours poring over others' texts, trying to make a connection that they had failed to see, or discover an oversight that he could take advantage of. He was expressing his frustration when someone finally said to him, "If everything has already been researched here, why not look for a topic in other regions?"
...That hadn't occurred to him.
Armed with only his academic brilliance and determination, Tourmaline set out for the Sunbeam Ruins, looking forward to meeting philosophers and scholars with a different base of knowledge. But despite how carefully he checked his star maps and how sure he was that he had made it after such a long journey, he found himself only as far as the Windswept Plateau. Frustrated and tired, he resolved to continue on, but before he could take off he heard a voice say, "Wow! You're the brightest dragon I've ever seen!" He turned to see a little fae dragon gawking at him, his frustrations completely obliterated by her praise. "Why, of course," he preened. "I am, after all, one of the Starfall Isles' best -" "You're from the Arcane Flight!? I've never had anyone from the Arcane Flight in my clan before!" she said as she flitted around him in excited circles. "I'm Whippette, I'm a clan leader - will you join my clan?" The fact that she cut him off irritated him immensely, but her eagerness to have him in her clan was endearing. It showed that at the very least she had good taste. He was about to say no before he realized that perhaps the Wind Flight didn't have nearly so many academics as the Arcane and Light Flights. Perhaps here he could not only find a wealth of research topics, but rise to become the greatest researcher in the land (because he was the brightest, naturally, and not for lack of competition at all). "I suppose I could join your little clan, but know that it is a high honor to have a scholar such as myself among you." He never did realize that she had complimented him on his scales, not his smarts. | xxx |

xxxxx | What sets a mage apart from other magic users is that they have refined their magical powers, reaching a new level of prowess through intensive study. As an academic mage, Tourmaline not only studies, but also contributes his research and magical theories to archives for other scholars in academia to read and learn from. In the clan, Tourmaline acts as a tutor for those seeking to hone their magical talents, and sometimes offers lectures to the clan as a whole. | xx |

xxxRelationships xx | xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx |
xxx | Many dragons from the Arcane Flight find themselves a little awkward with others due to the cultural precedence of academics over social relations. Similarly, Tourmaline was not the best at traversing the social landscape and instead just buried himself deeper in study. When his work was praised he was lofted above others, which simply served to isolate him further. Then he'd throw himself to the books again so he'd put forward more excellent work for even grander praise. The cycle continued and now Tourmaline is a brilliant scholar, but has no close friends. He has an inflated sense of self, which makes it difficult for many dragons to speak with him as they tend to find it grating. There aren't many dragons who can say they like him, but there are many who can say the opposite, and often do so frequently behind his back. People come and go in his life without ever truly connecting with him because it seems the only one he wants to connect with is himself, or perhaps a fresh research topic. However, he's not totally isolated. In a clan as small as this, there are dragons you run into time and time again. Inevitably some bonds, be they good or bad, will form. | xxx |
