In the fathomless depths of the oceans of Sornieth live many bizarre and dangerous creatures - some might even call them monsters.
Megalodon is one such monster.
A creature who takes two forms, he can become either a shark or a dragon - dwelling beneath or above the waves as it suits his moods.
Originally, the shapeshifter was hatched as a shark. However, the waters where he hatched were tainted by the runoff from a factory that produced arcane potions. As such, he grew rapidly to become a creature of immense size and power, able to attain intellect and cunning far beyond that of a mere beast. Warped by magic, he could no longer be truly called a shark - as such, he took the moniker of Megalodon.
Megalodon knew full well that merely hunting ocean creatures would never sate his vast appetite, never sate his lust for violence and bloodshed.
As such, the shark supplemented his diet by hunting creatures of the land that had been foolish enough to venture into the sea. His incredible strength allowed him to sink massive ships full of humanoid beasts - beasts which he would then devour whole in a mindless frenzy of gnashing jaws and rending teeth.
Every ship that he sank became a feast, and these feasts soon drew other sharks to his side. True sharks. They became his subjects, their loyalty and servitude bought in exchange for fresh meat. They told him of ships that had dared to enter the region, told him the locations of plentiful schools of fish and pods of whales. They explored the ruins of the ships he had sunk, bringing him the treasures that lay therein. Treasures with which he adorned himself, in a blatant display of his wealth and power.
Megalodon was no longer merely a solitary monster - he had become the rightful king of the seas.
Mere decades after his kingdom had been established, a storm blew in across the water. A great and terrible storm that churned the waves, dislodged the shipwrecks, and ultimately washed the shark ashore.
Helpless and beached, Megalodon assumed that his fate would be death. Then a group of dragons, Ridgebacks by breed, approached his deathbed. As they drew near, that same arcane power that had twisted him into a monster stirred for a second time, this time transforming him into a dragon.
In this form he appeared as a massive Ridgeback, with the fangs of a predator and a hide of scarred sharkskin. In this form, he could feel his strength returning. In this form, he could now survive on land.
The interloping dragons fled in terror from the massive beast that had appeared before them, their curiosity overridden by pure survival instinct. And they were fortunate - during his subsequent exploration of the abilities of this new form, he clumsily slaughtered dozens upon dozens of land-dwelling dragons and beasts.
However, Megalodon was ultimately a creature of the seas. Discovering that he could shift between his two forms at will, he returned to the deep - and to his kingdom. Fascinated by the world above, the shark still regularly visited the surface, assuming his draconic form and continuing his exploration.
It was not on the surface, however, that the shapeshifter first encountered the Clan of Second Chances. One Unrepentant dragon, a fool of a Coatl whom he would soon know as Venom, dared to swim far offshore, to draw perilously near to his kingdom. Megalodon responded to this threat as his nature dictated - he attacked.
Venom was a skilled swimmer, leading the shark on a chase that the Coatl assumed would end when he reached the safety of dry land. Incensed, Megalodon transformed and single-mindedly continued his pursuit. A breathless, desperate pursuit that ultimately led them both deep into the heart of Unrepentant territory.
The warriors of the clan rapidly mustered, attempting to intercept Megalodon. It was Silverslash himself who ultimately subdued the massive beast, quickly realizing how powerful it was - the shapeshifter posed a genuine threat to the Clan of Second Chances.
As such, the gladiator negotiated something of a truce. The Unrepentant dragons would be permitted to freely venture past the boundaries of Megalodon's kingdom, provided that they did not pollute or otherwise violate its waters.
The shark asked nothing in return. He could smell their fear, and it pleased him. In fact, he sweetened the deal - he expressed his willingness to defend the Unrepentant territory from seaward attacks, from the lesser beasts that often rose from the depths to assault the land.
Thinking him generous and benevolent, though somewhat of an easily-manipulated fool, the clan accepted. They failed to realize that accepting such an agreement would mark them as the rightful subjects of the king of the deep.
Though they provide amusing diversions and companions when he chooses to take to the land, the Clan of Second Chances is ultimately of no use to the shapeshifter. It is quite probable that he will never bother to even attempt to command them as his subjects. They are weak, most cannot swim, and none can survive in the depths.
This is likely for the best - the Unrepentant dragons are beholden to no-one, not even to Silverslash, and would never willingly obey. Besides, Megalodon has developed quite a taste for the flesh of any dragon who dares to oppose him.
