“What have I told you about listening to your gut more? It's smart. Do it.” Shadowforge grimaced at her mentor’s harsh words. The golden Skydancer was right – why couldn’t she just relax and listen to her instincts? There was something about the Mire that unnerved her, but the grayscale Wildclaw couldn’t put a claw on it. What was it about those pesky toridae and psywurms made her second-guess her actions? It was difficult to remember which monsters needed an initial pounding before she could take them out. Shadowforge knew she was in the easy venue – a few of the hatchlings that joined the school at the same time she did had already surpassed her and entered the Kelp Beds to finish their instruction. Narrowing her bright red eyes, she nodded to her mentor and steeled herself for another round of training. The first batch of monsters were simple. A pair of podids who fell quickly under the Wildclaw’s renewed determination. It wasn’t long before the student and her teacher encountered a group of psywurms in the damp darkness of the Mire. Shadowforge winced. Did she strike first? Use a bolt? What was the order of things again? Her mind spun with questions and time seemed to slow down as the first psywurm attacked, its brilliant hues catching the sunlight filtering through the treetops and casting dots of light around the little clearing. The female grunted as she dodged her assailant, millimeters to spare between her hide and the monster’s claws. THINK! Her thoughts screeched at her as she scrambled to regain her footing. In her periphery, the golden Skydancer shook her head, claws folded across her chest as she watched. “No, don’t think, you fool…. Just do.” Shadowforge took a deep breath and tried to relax. She thought of her time in the Scarred Wasteland, where she was born, and her journey into the Starfall Isles. She had to be as resilient and fierce as the contagions and calamities that forced her to the doorstep of another lair. It had nearly killed her to get out of the Seared Wasteland as a fresh hatchling. Her instincts had saved her in the boneyards of Plague… A loud thump filled the clearing as her mind cleared and she was able to take note of the battlefield. The sound was made by one of her opponents crashing into a fallen branch after a lethal blow delivered by the Wildclaw. Shadowforge snarled viciously at the last opponent, encouraged by her success with its fallen teammate, and leapt. Her mind was quiet, serene – there were no questions about the order of her blows or what to do next. As the dust settled, the Wildclaw stood victorious among the fallen bodies of her enemies. She cracked a grin at her mentor, still watching from the shadows. The golden Skydancer grinned -- “Much better.”
