Hakan grew up as a hunter, like the rest of his family. Skydancers and Nocturnes make good birds of prey, hooded pets trained for serving larger, wealthier dragons. Their family lived in a damp, windy aviary, protecting themselves against the elements of Ice as they could.

One night, Maximos, Hakan's hatchling brother, blundered away, his plump little body turned soaked, frigid, and thin in the sleet. Hakan followed him, chasing him until the two of them became lost. The wastes are unkind to even the best of adventurers, and they were most certainly not.

The thing in the ice shifted and moved, twisting under them like black mucus. It rose, entering Maximos, consuming him. Hakan bit and tugged at it, but it would not release, would not even go into Hakan himself. The monster that ate away at Maximos dulled his feathers, made his body strange and pained, vicious sometimes and confused when he wasn't.

Hakan took over caring for Maximos, leading him across Sornieth in hope of finding a cure for his brother.
