When the plague came, Acid joined his fellow healers to fight against it. Under the leadership of Vallei and alongside Adreana, the three worked tirelessly day and night to try and find a cure, even as more and more of their clanmates fell ill. He will forever be thankful to Ilar, who helped provide food and water and whatever else they needed. Every day, more of his clanmates joined the sick and dying. Every time they thought that had a cure, they were met with defeat and set right back to the beginning in their research. His frustration increased every time the sun set and they had nothing to show for all their efforts and all their struggles and all their work. It was when Iceflame came to them, having fallen ill, that things truly started to spiral downwards. |

Not only did clan moral drop exponentially, but it became a desperate fight to find a cure before their beloved leader died. They had been working hard before, but their efforts only increased when Iceflame joined the sick. However, with only three healers, they soon were stretched too thin with more than half the clan sick and dying. They could hardly keep up as the cases grew and they were quickly running out of space and resources. Their territory could only support so much and they were ravaging the landscape for food and remedies to ease the ailments of the sick and possible cures to the plague as a whole. Things only grew worse when both Vallei and Adreana fell ill, leaving Acid as the only trained healer able to continue stretching himself far beyond his limits. He tried everything. Every plant. Every known cure. Every possible combination of every known cure or useless resources. But he was powerless to stop the plague. Every day, he watched clanmates slip through his claws. There was nothing he could do as clanmate after clanmate drew their last breaths. Though he continued to try to find a cure, he was becoming more hopeless with every spark of life he watched fade from his friends' eyes. Then, new cases stopped coming. The last of the sick passed away and took the plague with them. The survivors remained isolated in their dens, as they had throughout the plague, for weeks after, too afraid it might not be over yet to call it safe. However, after a while had passed with no new cases, they all emerged. Acid's heart fell. Ten survivors, he counted. Ten out of thirty-seven. He had failed. When Ilar and Acal began arguing over who should lead the clan in the wake of Iceflame's death, he couldn't bring himself to care. They had all already suffered so much. Why did it matter anymore? Couldn't they have time to heal? When the clan separated, he chose to live outside both groups. He couldn't choose between his beloved clanmates. He couldn't fail anyone else again. Thus, he became the sole healer for everyone, both sides and those who chose to become unaligned. |
