Sleetshade was born to an agent of the Shadowbinder, and brought to the Southern Icefields almost as soon as he hatched. As a result, his elemental alignment fluctuated wildly. Depending on where he was closer to, the Icefield or the Tangled Woods, his eye colour would fade or strengthen, between violet and sky-blue. His whole childhood,
he was trained to suppress his shadow nature, and take over his parents' role as the Shadowbinder's eyes in the Southern Icefields. As a result, he grew up isolated from the dragons around him, driven to selective mutism by his fear of befriending those he might have to later betray.

When he came of age, he was given his first orders: bring down an icy cliff face over one of the Icewarden's legions. So began his career, embracing his birthright of spying and trickery. He proved exceptionally talented, doing more damage in his short career than many of his ancestors had done before him. There was even a bounty put out for the infamous "Stormhollow", as his codename was. But it was not to last. On a mission to take down the patriarch of a major clan,
he failed. He was discovered.
That night, there was a fierce blizzard the likes of which the Icefield rarely saw, and his mixed elemental alignment meant he couldn't tolerate the temperature. While only mild, the hypothermia setting in caused him to take a wrong turn during his escape-- and he was caught.

Dragged to the Fortress of Ends, Sleetshade was brought before the Idol of Judgement-- the magical avatar of one very displeased Icewarden. To his surprise, the deity did not execute him, instead ordering that he thrown into the Icefield's legendary prisons, his shackles carved with the Shadowbinder's rune in a personal insult.

He quickly became rather well known by the guards, the legendary Gaolers. Not for anything he did, exactly, but more for what he didn't do. Sleetshade never spoke.
He never made a noise.
He never resisted, but he never cooperated.
He was just... Empty. Something within him had broken in a way that could never be fully restored.
And so he soon ended up as a favorite toy of the crueler wardens.

He was let out of his cell occasionally, but of course, there was a catch. He was only ever let out of his cell to play the role of executioner for his fellow traitors-- doomed to fight them, gladiator-style, until he met the one he could not defeat.

However, his salvation came on the longest night of the year. Alongside the many creatures that emerged that night, there came a small spirit fox; from an old decorative lamp outside Sleetshade's cell. None of the guards had been aware the lamp was haunted, although to be fair you usually have to be pretty good at your job to become a sleeper agent for the Shadowbinder.

The fox, who revealed itself to be called Nubenix, took pity on it's shadow kin and broke the tundra's chains, leading him out of the prisons and evading the guards. But escaping the most famous prison in all Sornieth is easier said than done. Covering his tracks took moons. Reaching out to several contacts his father had maintained in the Shifting Expanse, the young tundra finally escaped under cover of darkness, crossing the sea and desert in mere hours through his relatively neglected shadow magic. Seeking refuge at every clan he came across, he was rejected again and again: until he was taken in by Shadeswathe, who, having great respect for what the he had gone through, vouched for him.

Unfortunately for Sleetshade, this was not the end of his troubles. Unbeknown to many in the clan, he is still forced to play the part of his old role as an assassin-- this time for the Orchestrator, leader of the shadowy Murkclaw guild. (This happens to be Moonlord, although the guild is older than the Wispwalkers.) This added stress is, in truth, the only reason why Sleetshade has never recovered from his time in the Fortress of Ends-- not because of what went down then, but because he is still reliving it almost every day now.

____Poor Sleetshade. No one deserves what that dragon was forced to go through. Truly, the Icewarden can be more savage than the Plaguebringer when his pride is wounded. I have heard the story many times over, the only one who has heard it firstpaw, and it is disgraceful. What kind of deity would command a dragon to kill his own parents? As if his life wasn't bad enough anyway, living as a spy, a world away from his homeland.

____I feel that is why I started watching him, in the days before I emerged out to help. Whereas most of the other prisoners in his wing of the prisons roared curses at the guards, or made other moves of defiance, like you would expect from the "troublesome" wing... He just sat there, head down, this strange little facade of a smile on his face. And the whole journey back to the Tangled Wood, he had the same look. That's why I am going to stay with him. I feel he needs it.
