Mate to Meta

Draft 1 - Still in Progress:

Keric had always wanted to start a clan ever since he was a child; to leave his mark in the world in a way that would flourish, rather than be a random fact for hatchlings to learn about in history. It wasn’t long before he left his birth clan in search of the perfect spot.

The Fae wandered the Tangled Wood for days searching, until he felt a pull toward the Wispwillow Grove. On his way, he came across a Tundra by the name of Meta and she joined in on his search as she too wanted to start a clan. They talked about their plans for the clan, what laws they would have, and traditions they might start until they finally found the spot.

Where the giant glowshrooms grew like trees, there were also clearings. It was in one such clearing that Keric felt it in his bones, that this was the spot to start his clan. So, Meta and he got to work on making the clearing theirs. It took several weeks, but finally their hard work paid off, and soon others joined the clan named Dolus.

All went well for a time. Keric was learning what it truly meant to be a clan leader, but he was happy. The clan was flourishing more than he could have dreamed. He was not meant to stay clan leader however, as Dolus’s medium brought word to Keric that the great Shadowbinder herself needed aid. In what, no one knew, but Keric knew he could not ignore her call.

This lead to a massive shift in the clan. Half felt that it was their duty and honour, to aid their home’s deity, while others felt that a deity such as herself should be able to handle whatever should come her way. Eventually with great reluctance, Keric, Meta and half the clan left to aid the Shadowbinder leaving Noctis as the clan leader.

For two long years Keric and Meta fought side by side against the Shade and whatever else the Shadowbinder thought was a great enough threat. For two long years Keric fought with himself about his decision to leave the clan he worked so hard to create. He knew that fighting for the Shadowbinder was a great honour, but even still he missed the chaos of Dolus.

He yearned for the chance to return home, if only for a short visit to see how much it’s grown. To see dragons burrowing into the glowshrooms as they sway in the breeze, to hear the hatchlings’ laughter as they chased each other, to revel in the chaotic calm of day to day life. He brought such wishes to Meta, his ever-loving mate. How much had they been through together? The weeks seemed to blur together. Fight after fight, barely a moments rest before the Shade started up again. Keric began to lose himself in the seemingly never ending battles… Until he almost lost.

The Fae was no stranger to injuries sustained in battle, having learned by now how to block the pain until a time he could rest. Being clawed in the face, while uncommon, was not something that usually Keric let stop him from fighting. A swipe across his eyes though, that caused Keric to freeze. He knew he needed them healed as fast as possible. How many rumors had he heard about eye injuries causing blindness, he didn’t know.

Panicking, he out called for Meta. Surprisingly she heard his cries from across the battlefield, and wasted no time in coming to his aid. Her heart ached at the sight of her mate, and she gingerly brought him to the healers. Both she and Keric knew that they shouldn’t abandon the battle, but they couldn’t care any less.

Hours passed as the healers worked on the pair before they could truly rest. A few days later confirmed Keric’s fear that he would never see again. While he had hoped that he would see again, he knew in the back of his mind that he would be. That his last sight was a battle against the beastclans for the glory of the Shadowbinder. It did little to ease his mind. How he wished he could see his mate again.
