And so it went, and a fine enough life it was. But the wasteland has never believed in peace, and so war sank its teeth deep into those dry northern lands, even into the little tent cities and trading outposts, left the trinkets scattered in the dust together with bodies and blood. Perhaps it would have left her there too, but this was the war of a new foreign king, and the king had decided that he needed a queen. And it happened that her name was known in throughout that bloody country, and so instead she was brought south to a great city, to a throne, to a man who reminded her of the midday sun; sharp and bright-burning and merciless. The things I can give you, he purred, diamonds, glory. And she didn't care for either but the cold-eyed stares of the guards behind her told her that there wasn't really a choice and so queen she became, growing wary and haughty in that gilded cage of a court, and not for a moment did she love her husband, but she learned his ruthless world of power, of violence and cunning and ambition. She had not given him an heir yet. All that separated her from the throne was his life, was an ounce of poison, a whispered contract-

Once they called her wasteland rose, and viewed her much the same, a fleeting glimpse of beauty, of elegance, of grace; so rare in the dry savage country between the Boneyard and the Shattered Plain that she once called home. Once she wandered with her family of traders, dancing among the whirlwinds, singing ancient songs in her low sultry purr of a voice, drawing crowds of admirers who lavished her with gifts both exotic and simple: imported incense and oils and silks; crude necklaces strung with teeth and pretty stones, dead scrubland flowers pressed paper thin and translucent. Lithe, clever, dark-eyed girl, singer of the dust-storm ballads, known by all, loved by many and owned by none, free and unpredictable as the hot desert wind.

But as she plotted against him slowly and carefully, drew allies to her side with hushed promises of power and prestige - others were doing the same. She wept when she learned what happened, when she watched the fighting in the streets and saw the banners ascend, when she fled that burning city, courtiers in tow. She didn't weep for him. Gods no. Good riddance, the swine. But she had been close - so close. All her pain and patience had almost paid off and it had been snatched from her. The city, the throne, all so close she could taste them- stolen. But she hadn't survived so long without tenacity and so she fled where she knew she wouldn't be followed, to that shade-stained wreck of a temple where Sunder had fallen, to plan and wait. Someday, the city will be hers. This time she doesn't plan to falter.
