An Unexpected Price
Subtitle subtitle subtitle "You know people hate you," a high, reedy voice trilled out from between the Guardian's eyes. If she didn't know better, she'd have thought it was her own subconscious, those little fears and doubts that creep in from time to time, ricocheting around in her brain pan...but it wasn't. No, instead, the little arctic blue and coal-colored fae that was perched atop her head had lobbed the comment. "What? No they don't," Ashe protested after a beat of silence, her thoughts finally turning over like some disused steam engine, oiled and stoked for the first time in a century. "People love me," she concluded, a strangely ebbing confidence seeping out between the syllables. Ceo rolled over, his chest soon replaced by his rump, and his tail flicking between Ashe's eyes. "Mmmmnooo," the fae wheedled out, "They hate you - don't get me wrong, they want to be you and they respect you, but they do hate you - because you make them feel inadequate."
Ashe grumbled wordlessly, the orange and soot-colored dragon's rich tone curling in her throat like wood smoke on an autumn evening. Ceo took the opportunity to further annoy the disgruntled Guardian, stretching out - way out - to tap one foot upon her snout. Ashe spluttered, one foreleg rising to show a flash of claws and a faux strike at the offending foot. "You smell like fish," she admonished her tiny compatriot, "I should roast and eat you." Silence once again spooled out as if it were so much thread from a broken bobbin. The massive female's thoughts immediately drifted away, born on the tide of her seafaring friend's words. "And people do like me, even if they feel inadequate around me, because I'm proactive and take initiative. I get stuff done - stuff that benefits everyone," she argued back, one lower canine protruding upward over her top lip as her bottom jaw shifted forward in a hardened pout of contention. "Meh," came Ceo's reply, though to which aspect of Ashe's oration remained unclear. "Let's go get food," the odd little hood ornament dictated to his massive method of conveyance, "and then visit the hatchlings." Ashe simply nodded in agreement.
