Named after the Greek philosopher, author and founder of Epicureanism; an ethical philosophy of simple pleasure, friendship, and retirement. Epicurus believed that, on the basis of radical materialism he could disprove the possibility of the soul’s survival after death, and hence the prospect of punishment in the afterlife. He regarded this fear of death and punishment in the afterlife as the primary cause of anxiety amongst humans, and aimed to eliminate these fears to leave people free to pursue both physical and mental pleasures.
