ABOUT

Prior to Valerian’s birth, his parents met in the Snowsquall Tundra of the Ice territory. He had grown up along with his sister, Lavender. The climate of the tundra was a harsh one, especially his mother, who had grown up in Shadow. Lavender was a weak and sickly hatchling. It wasn’t long until she fell ill. Both Valerian and his mother knew that she wouldn’t recover.

Once the tragedy has struck, his mother chose to make a trip back to the Shadow territory, while his father refused, insisting on staying. This greatly affected his mother’s trust and broke her heart. Still, she had Valerian to take care of and she knew that she had to keep him safe.

Meanwhile, seeing what happened to Lavender greatly affected Valerian. He felt oddly responsible for her passing, but he knew he couldn’t help it. The nearest available healer was too far away… This set his mind on pursuing a path in medicine.

His mother chose to settle close to Forum of the Obscured Crescent which served as a place of upbringing for him. Valerian debated how he would cultivate his medical interest. His mother was hesitant to part with her only child, however he insisted on going to Plague to pursue his studies. There, he met his mentor, Xenophilius and became acquaintances with Halle, who would become a long standing friend and partner in medicine.

Valerian had eagerly begun his studies under Xenophilius’ mentorship until he steadily began to lose his passion. In reality, he did not lose it. He chose to direct it to another method of medicine instead. He found himself deeply invested in plants and their properties. This caused dispute between himself and his mentor, who was convinced that Valerian’s interest was nonsensical. Out of frustration, Valerian left, looking for another place to stay. He was lucky to find the idyllic Eyrie. In parallel to studying what his heart truly lied in, he sold trinkets that he had made to scrape by. It was not ideal, but it soothed his soul at the very least. Still, there was a steady hum of anxiety under the feeling of surface contentedness. He was not doing enough and out of deeply conceived respect for his mother, he wanted to push himself further.

He studied independently for some time, before making trips back to plague for consultations and hoping to find another mentor. During one of his trips, he had met a witch named Serefina. Her job was to read out fortunes regarding love, which earned her the nickname ‘The Love Witch’. Valerian noticed her and became enticed. Looks like her powers ran deeper than that. After their strange affair, she chose to discard him and Valerian finally snapped back to reality. Now he had two hatchlings of his own. Serefina had insisted on taking one of the hatchlings, Laurus. Despite all of his protests, he could only take one of the children home. He was left dazed and disoriented and fled back to the Eyrie, in hopes that things would look up.

Valerian is one of the most hospitable and relaxed students that one would meet in the Eyrie. Perhaps, no wonder his own hospitality got him into so much trouble... For a lack of better words, he lacks a backbone, which truly indents his character. Despite this shortcoming, he is still very much loved and trusted. There is one thing Valerian is unable to do and that is to lie.
