Sprout grew up in a fishing clan located on the edges of the Sea of a Thousand Currents. With his old clan he learned decades-old tactics for catching fish and tracking animals. There among his peers he was second rate in his hauls, and found himself unnoticed among the star hunters and reliable fishers of the clan. A few years into his adulthood, he struck off south to lend his efforts as best he could to a different clan. After hopping from water clan to water clan he ended up at the zephyr steppes. While trapping for his meals on his own on the planes, his traps began to go missing and commonly were tampered with. Anticipating malicious intent, he stayed out for days by one trap, waiting for the culprit, and it is there he came upon Hydroc and Glassy from the Reedwhistle clan, who has been investigating his traps out of curiosity and admiration of the craft, not realizing that they had deactivated them in the process.

Sprout was invited to stay for a few nights at the Inn to stay somewhere safe from the winds and wandering animals. He has since moved out of the inn and made himself a resident here, his talents exemplary among normal dragons. It is here he finally feels useful.

Life in Reedwhistle was peaceful for many months. Then, one day, as Sprout was routinely checking his traps, he came across a sight that struck terror into his heart: a dragon caught and laying in his own trap.. a dragon that would soon make her way into his heart. Vivian, a sick and aggressive dragon from the lands of plague stayed with him until her leg and mind healed, and then stayed for much longer.

Their little family was completed by the discovery of an abandoned hatching out by the river: Pit.
