Personality: Filipe was always a very timid child. With the weight of his responsibilities bearing down on him and the knowledge that his being the heir at all caused a great deal of unhappiness, he grew into an adult with a massive inferiority complex and self-esteem issues. Though he did his best to project the confidence and self-assurance he felt a proper leader should have, it was a very fragile facade. However, once he decided to stop living according to someone else’s expectations and instead by his own merits he was finally able to overcome his timidity and walk with confidence. He is still very reserved with strangers, but around friends and loved ones he is very warm and friendly. He detests bullies and people who play favorites, and always does his best to stand up for what he feels to be right.

History: Filipe was one of two siblings adopted into a small ice clan called Clan Escalus, his egg having been abandoned by his biological parents. He hatched in the Frozen Floes to a dragon called Olander and Olander’s mate Velvet, and was raised alongside their biological son Anders and a second adopted brother, Dimitri.

Filipe was always his father’s favorite among his siblings, and was chosen ahead of even Olander’s biological son Anders to be the leader of their small family clan. When he was smallest he lapped up this attention, thriving on his father’s praise. However, gradually he became aware that all the attention that was lavished on him had an adverse effect on his siblings, who experienced a great deal of parental neglect as consequence. The resented Filipe tremendously, and he started to become aware of the fact that he was very much alone and friendless. His father was the only one who offered him support, but with that being Filipe’s only rock of support he knew he had to live up to his father’s expectations… or face losing that last pillar.

It didn’t help matters that Filipe wasn’t really much suited to leadership, with his shyness and subsequent inferiority complex. Stress and loneliness eventually lead Filipe to spiral downwards into depression, and his deteriorating mental state only served to add to his existent stress as he struggled to hide it from his father. Things finally came to a head, however, when Filipe got into an explosive argument with Anders, one that actually came to blows between the two of them. The brothers realized at that point just how toxic their situation was, and how negatively living in Olander’s shadow had impacted their lives. They loved their father deeply, but his favoritism had driven a wedge between them such to the point that no matter who became leader they were unlikely to stay together without him to hold them to one another. After convening with Dimitri, the three agreed that they would leave and join a bigger clan- one where they would not have the favoritism of Olander to decide where they would stand in life, and where they could have some space from each other to help heal the wounds of their damaged relationships. Filipe was the one to confront Olander with their decision, and in spite of his father’s attempts to both guilt and plead with him, he stood resolute.

Eventually the brothers found their way to Clan Brayuh and settled there. Without the pressure of expectation on him, Filipe took a much more low-key job as the clan’s quartermaster, keeping stock of their hoarded treasures and cooperating with the bookkeeper Seamus. He eventually became best friends with his brother Dimitri, though his relationship with Anders remains very strained.
