《《 Hi there! My name is Hylis. If you want to know my whole story, and how I came to look like this instead of like I do in the picture below, you're going to have to go on a bit of an adventure yourself, and talk to some folks! 》》
x

Don't worry, they don't bite, and they don't mind telling the story over again either. Most of them are dead and don't have anything better to do. First you're going to visit one of my living friends though - pick up that orange book there, yes that's right, they're enchanted books, they'll take you where you need to go! Have fun! --->>

(and I'll see you when you get back!)

《《 You find yourself back in Hylis' lair, and he turns around from sniffing at a brewing pot (he was looking a bit wistful, you pretend not to notice) and exclaims excitedly, "Oh! You're back! 》》
x
I hope you've enjoyed your journey. Now, I won't leave you in suspense any longer, here's how it all ended." He steps forward, and closing his eyes, gently leans his cold, ghost forehead against yours.

Is this what it’s like to be dead?

“I would imagine so, mate,” Renegade’s raspy voice said, trying to imitate Hylis’.
Hylis opened his eyes. He was... Not quite on the ground, he was extremely lightweight… and extremely big… So that hadn’t been a dream, he really was a Bogsneak now. How did he feel about that? And his pearl really had been shattered; it’s pieces lay scattered around him, along with the sword, which was glowing with a strange light, and the smoking shadows which were all that were left of the stone and it’s pieces. He looked up at Renegade, who was peering down at him through the hole in the ceiling above him, looking very tired, but slightly less... haunted? His eyes were still glowing, and his chest was still empty, but he didn’t smell of rot anymore, so that was something. Or could he just... not smell anything anymore?

“Did-did I do it?” Hylis stammered. It was surprisingly hard to talk, when you weren’t used to, well, not really having a mouth.

“Seems to me you did,” Renegade said, stretching and pulling away from the hole. “I’m dead, you're dead, that sword is glowing, for whatever reason... the sun seems a little brighter than it was, the Phantoms and Spirits and things are gone-”

“You don’t look very different,” Hylis said skeptically.

“Guess I’m just too used to looking this way,” Renegade sighed, examining one astral leg, and then another. “But I can always change myself later if I want to. I feel like it’d be an awful lot of work right now. How do ghosts regain energy? Or am I eternally tired?” He peered back down at Hylis. “Say, you can’t be talking on the looks department. You’re practically see-through.”

Hylis looked down at himself, and was rather disconcerted. He really was hardly there, just a sort of grey-ish outline.

“Too bad we can’t carry that sword,” Renegade remarked, running an arm through a vine and looking very pleased with the results. “Looks like it might be powerful.”

“Guess we’ll just have to leave it for… someone who will need it later… maybe…” Hylis said, still a bit distracted with his non existent body.

“Yeah, we’re it’s ghost guardians now I guess.” Renegade was having a harder and harder time sounding dismal. He was beginning to sound quite thrilled.

“Wait- do we haunt this place now? Since we- we-”

“Died here? You got it.”

“What about the others?”

“What about them?”

“Didn’t they used to haunt here? Didn’t you say that?”

“Oh, yes, well, the woods in general, mostly. They have their own specific glades or trees or rocks or whatever… you can wander from your haunting place, just not very far.”

“So, I can’t go back home.”

Renegade was quiet for a long moment. Then, very quietly, and not mockingly this time, he said, “Sorry mate.”

Hylis would have cried, but ghosts didn't seem capable of producing tears. “But why am I a ghost?” he wailed. “Not every dragon that dies turns into a ghost, surely!”

“If you die by magic, you do,” Renegade said.

Hylis sat down dismally, sinking his ghostly body into the earth. He stared at his broken pearl, and the smoking shadows, and the glowing sword. He didn’t want to be a hero anymore.

“Hey, chin up now!” Renegade said with forced cheerfulness. “It’s not all bad. We’ll tell the ghosts nearer the border to keep a lookout. Your family will come looking for you, and you’ll be able to see them again, at least.”

“They won’t even recognize me,” Hylis moaned. “Look at me!”

Renegade sighed. “Look,” he said sternly, “First thing’s first, you got to get out of that hole. Come on now, up and out.”

Hylis reluctantly let himself float up to Renegade’s level.

“Now then,” Renegade continued briskly, “Up for some sunlight, shall we?” He began to float up through the ceiling and the branches that entangled it, with Hylis floating obediently behind him.

Up above the trees, the air was not so gloomy. The afternoon sun smiled down at them out of the sky. You could see the swoop of the shadowy basin all around them, and beyond, the distant pink glow of Arcane; before that the sickly green haze that hung over Plague; behind them, the bright gleam of Light, and off to their left, a blue line that was the sea.

“See?” Renegade said quietly, motioning with a talon. “Look at all of it. And if it weren’t for you, it might have one day been swallowed up in darkness.”

“It might still,” Hylis pointed out. “There are more threats, always.”

“But you held back the tide. Right here, right now, you held it. So, you died. Hylis,” Renegade said, looking at him intently, “You saved the world.”

The world is bigger than just you.

Hylis breathed deep; or as deep as you can breathe, when you don’t actually have lungs. He began to smile. His body turned stary and blue, and he breathed, and he remembered, and he let go. He didn’t know what would happen next, but that was alright. He had friends, he had his memories, and Renegade was right: his friends and family, they would come looking for him. And even though his body would be unrecognizable, there was more to him than that. They would know him.

Renegade was watching him, and seeing him smile, breathed a sigh of relief. “Feeling better now? Good. Let’s go show our newly not-there bodies off to the others, shall we?”

“Hold on,” Hylis said.

“What?” Renegade asked.

“Can I call you Ren?”

“Well…” Renegade looked torn, but finally gave in. “Since you asked so nicely,” he sighed.

“Also, I think you’re forgetting something.”

“What?” Ren asked, looking around him.

“To thank me,” Hylis grinned. “You know, for killing you.”

“Oh,” Ren said with a role of his eyes. “Well mate,” he said dramatically, pretending to rest a claw on Hylis’ shoulder, “You have my sincerest thanks. Thanks for making me dead. I’m forever in your debt.” He paused, then: “Literally forever.”

Hylis laughed.

“Now are you ready?” Ren asked impatiently. “You have no idea how long I’ve been waiting for this moment.

“One more thing,” Hylis said, concentrating hard. “Gotta dress for this party.”

Spirals of neon pink swirled out from the edges of his eyes. He struck a ridiculous pose. “How do I look?” he asked.

Ren twirled his tail dramatically, and imitating Javier’s accent, said, “Marvelous, just marvelous.”

They both laughed, and leapt down from the house to make their way through the forest.

Death wasn’t going to be so bad; it was only the newest adventure.

Hylis blinks at you with his long, pink lashes, and you blink back, a smile playing across your face. "You liked it?" he asks. You nod - then pause. You want to ask if he ever did see his family again, but you don't want to upset him, either.

Hylis goes back to puttering over his pot, not noticing your hesitation, but as he turns you notice an open box of letters on the table. You don't want to be nosy, but you can't help but lean over to read the signature scrolled at the bottom of one that's just hanging over the edge - "Love, Mom," it says. You feel suddenly warm and content.

Hylis turns back to you with a steaming bowl of something. "You know, I can't enjoy this anymore, or even taste test it to see if it's right, but this is an old family recipe, so I'm well practiced. You must be hungry after all that telekinesis. Bopping around the forest. Holding your breath over my adventures. Ext." You laugh, and take the warm bowl in your hands. It smells heavenly, and you tell him so. He beams.

"Do stay awhile and eat," he says, "I always enjoy company. And though I'm sure you've had your fill of books for now, I do have a library to explore..."

the end
