Librarian
Ever since she was young, people told Viintaas she was like a perfect flower - a beautiful sight to be admired by all. Growing up in the Everbloom Gardens, Viintaas was surrounded by flowers, and though she loved their sweet fragrance and bright colors, they always made her a little sad. Did they, like her, detest being stared at by strangers, seen as little more than a pretty, delicate thing? On one of his visits home, Kunzii was introduced to her, though he did not manage to catch her name. Instead, she was merely introduced as “our perfect flower” before being shuffled away to be admired by others. It was not difficult for Kunzii to see how unhappy she was, even through her practiced smiles. The evening before he planned to leave, Kunzii managed to pull Viintaas away from her doting family for a talk - “If you had the choice, what would you do with your life?” Viintaas was taken aback, as she had never been asked such a question, but replied with utmost honesty that she wanted nothing more than to spend her time alone, reading. She had always been told, though, that she shouldn’t lock herself away in a library, and should instead be seen by others so they can admire her beauty. More than her love of reading, Viintaas wanted to make others happy, and so her life had become that of a rare and precious flower. Never one to stand idly by and let a young girl’s dreams be crushed, Kunzii offered to take her to a sanctuary near the Shifting Expanse where she could caretake a library desperately in need of a thoughtful librarian. Worried about her parents but eager to leave the life that made her so miserable, Viintaas was torn. After nearly a week spent talking with Kunzii and laying out the feelings she had been suppressing for so long, Viintaas finally decided to leave. The sudden feeling of freedom was almost overwhelming, as if finally taking a deep breath after years struggling to keep from drowning. It took a lot of continued reassurance from Kunzii that it was acceptable to pursue her own desires instead of focusing on making others happy, but the more time she spent away from home the more she started to believe it. I deserve to be happy. Once they arrived back at the Tavern, Viintaas quickly found her place as the sweet, soft-spoken librarian. As much as other guests enjoy seeing Viintaas out and about, she prefers her books and spending quiet time alone in the library organizing the rare volumes. She’s taken it upon herself to procure new books from the world over and collect information brought in by travelers and dedicated information brokers like Dez. She also interviews visitors to the Tavern to add their life stories to the library’s ever-growing collection of experiences. She’s often heard to remark, “The more people I meet and learn from, the more alive the Tavern feels.” Some joke that the hundreds of interviews stored in the library have a way of helping the Tavern grow with the “power of their combined souls”, but everyone knows that’s just fanciful speculation. More recently, Viintaas was appointed a guard to help keep her priceless collection safe. At first she was disappointed to have to share her solitude, but it did not take long for her disappointment to turn into delight as a love blossomed between her and her gruff guard. The pair quickly became inseparable, and now Viintaas ventures out of the library more often to play chess with Rovaan at the cafe or go for a walk on the grounds. When she isn’t spending quiet, quality time with her wife, Viintaas devotes her days to publishing therapy manuals written by the various healers at the Tavern for distribution in other clans, or enjoying the artful creations of her twins, Osley and Katau. |
