Biography

Allria
Keeper of the Bugs
True Neutral

PkKAmaj.png
With so many fae in Clan _______, somebody needs to cultivate bugs and keep a reliable source of food handy in case the insect hunting goes poorly. But that's more dangerous than expected in the Isles. Even the insects are magical, and putting too many bugs in the same place tends to end with them forming a super-intelligent spell-slinging swarm, or simply outright exploding.

So, to farm arcane insects, a dragon needs a particular set of skills. A way to keep thousands of bugs under control, each with nothing but evil in their tiny minds. Some dragons will spend years developing magic that can control bugs, while others will design complex wards to keep insects in their terrariums. Insect Keeper is a much more prestigious position than dragons from other flights would expect, and not only because the keeper gets first pick of the best bugs. The rest of the clan respects the magical talent that a Keeper must hone to do their job.

Instead of bothering with all that, Allria plays the trumpet.

She claims it's not even very difficult. A doot here and a doot there, and all the bugs go back into their cages. An extra-long doot to warn any stragglers that if they don't get home fast she'll freeze them solid. Allria always makes sure to freeze the last bug regardless of how fast it is, just to make an example to the rest. Sometimes she'll freeze all but the fastest one, so that it can tell the story of what happened to its brethren. The bugs do not deserve to know peace.

Her bugs are kept in what's affectionately called the Bug Pit, since it really is just a pit dug into the island. It's quite a ways away from the actual fortress, but it's where she preforms the vital task of keeping the clan fed. Not far enough away, say some of Clan _______. During quiet moments, they can hear the faint sounds of a very out of tune trumpet from anywhere on the island.

The rest of the clan is equally annoyed, but also intrigued by her skill, mostly because none of them can control bugs by playing a trumpet badly. Allria was willing to go through with some experiments, and her clanmates determined that while the bugs only respond to Allria's playing, she only needs to use something similar to a trumpet. A tuba will work just as well, but Allria isn't fond of instruments that are larger than she is. You could put a fae in one of those and launch them with one good honk! The experiments turned out to be useful though, because without having gone through those trials she wouldn't have thought to use a copper tube and a funnel when the trumpet went missing. Just in time, too, the front doors were beginning to bow inwards under the sheer mass of fireflies.

A few dragons have offered to design a more effective instrument, but Allria will stick with her trumpet. No sense in messing with what works, right? Being arcane, the rest of Clan _______ disagrees. It seems like everyone who eats insects has something to say about how Allria could be wrangling them better. From letting the insects roam freely throughout the fortress to attaching a smoke machine to her instrument, the bad ideas keep on coming. But like the eternal ice in the south, Allria won't budge. Well, she might take that one suggestion of strapping a bayonet to her trumpet, just so she can stab it at the next dragon who thinks they've had a great idea.

Allria's position means that most insect-eaters like her, but none moreso than Phidi. The spiral, in her endless quest to do everything, often forgets to eat anything. She owes her life to Allria in more ways than one. Usually, Allria brings Phidi food before she starves, and drags her away from her current obsession to get some proper sleep while she's at it. But sometimes Phidi does remember that dragons need food to live, and that's occasionally worse. To not waste any time, she'll dive right into the bug pit and try to eat all the bugs, and thus nearly get swarmed to death before Allria can arrive and doot her to safety.

You can play music on a trumpet? No, Allria's pretty sure it's just a dooting tool.

Elsheri
Unwanted Visions
Lawful Neutral

PkKAmaj.png
Intercepting and interpreting messages from the deep is a point of pride for the few maren who have the skill to do so. An oracle can expect to enjoy great riches from all who are willing to pay for any look at the future. But not Elsheri. Some of her prophecies might be legendary, but she would never know, as they're all buried under useless trite. If the greatest oracles have a direct connection to the Tidelord, than she has that, along with a direct connection to every last fish in the ocean.

The voices of futures absolutely nobody cares about never cease. Whether she wants to or not, she'll end up knowing when some random tundra will next sneeze, or where and when a crate full of cheap trinkets will fall off the deck of a ship. It takes an exhausting amount of effort to isolate a possible thread that interests her while simultaneously shutting out the rest so that she can actually hear it.

But eventually she managed to latch on to one thread of fate long enough for it to pull her to Clan _______. There, she met Allria. Or rather, heard Allria. The fae was making absolutely terrible noises on a trumpet, for no possible reason that Elsheri could figure out. Though, Elsheri noticed, figuring things out had suddenly because much easier now that the endless stream of prophecy had ceased. And, even though the fae had put the trumpet down, they weren't coming back. Her oracle talents had finally helped her for once. Even if all they had accomplished was removing themselves from her brain.

It turns out that the freedom from the unwanted voices and visions was only temporary, although the respite from them did last for many days. After some experimentation, Elsheri concluded that only Allria could play the trumpet badly enough to scare fate away. Or rather, the same magic that allows Allria to control bugs also pulls the wiggling threads of prophecy right out of her head. Thus, Elsheri has to visit Clan _______ often to have the excess future sight dooted right out of here. But that's fine. There's far worse dragons than Allria to spend an afternoon with.
