Elcid's wings were crippled in a Beastclan raid when he was a hatchling, rendering him flightless. Determined to fly again, he sought help from a former Lightning member who taught him the basics of robotics. He had almost reached mastery when his clan was attacked a second time by the centaurs in response to an attack his own clan had lead against them on orders from a new leader.

He fled, and the only thing that saved him was his strong legs -- he had become quite fast from spending nearly his entire life earthbound. He stumbled upon Ralakay Glen several weeks later in the quiet reaches of Starwood Strand, disheveled and starving, and was startled to find it was lead by a centaur, a member of the same race that had killed his family and destroyed his home in Light territory. He deeply distrusted her, but need drove him to grudgingly accept the centaur's help. Eventually Elcid grew to like Hawktalon and found himself a home in her clan. Her mages and she herself even aided him on his quest to fix his wings, helping him to build a set of artificial wings woven with magic that when affixed to his own wings enabled him to take to the sky once more.

Elcid has very weak limbs as a result of a devastating injury when he was a young adult. He was paralyzed from the neck down for several years, and while he's regained mobility, he wears prosthetics to support his body when he needs to walk or fly long distances. His little robot partner helps him manipulate delicate things and fetches tools for him when he's in pain. He spent a while working as an engineer on a Lightning clan airship, which often required external repairs during flight, so he's more than comfortable wearing his prosthetics for long periods of time. He actually prefers to keep them on because they feel like a part of him.

He now works as the clan engineer, helping the mages and scholars service their instruments, inventing in his free time. Elcid has always had a knack for robotics and enjoys the challenge of creating artificial intelligence. His ultimate goal is to build a fully self-sufficient robotic lab assistant that can help him when his own body grows wary. Given that his only successful attempt -- if it can be considered successful -- resulted in the violent cyborg, Vavia, he probably shouldn't be as optimistic as he is. But he simply refuses to let himself be discouraged; failures are merely learning experiences.
