The moons were all dark on the night Vesper and Suvon hatched. In most clans, this was nothing but an interesting astronomical event. However, in the clan of the cold lights it was a sentence to a life of shame.

The clan would always await this darkest night, where they would bring in an egg made to hatch on that night. For that was the night when the fairies would change their hatchlings out for their changelings.

When the egg hatched, the hatchling would be treated poorly by the other children of the clan until the dark night next came and the cycle would repeat. Every generation would have one of these changelings as they believed doing this would save them from the fairies affecting their clan in other ways.

However, these hatchlings born on this night were never changelings. They never were. The fae around the clan’s location did exist, but they never did anything remotely similar to switching out hatchlings.

One night, things were a little bit different. One of the clan’s mother’s nests, a single egg, was off time. That night, there were two eggs to hatch - an ice egg along with the arcane egg of the already-mourning mother.

Vesper hatched and was treated according to tradition. Tossed the last scraps of food, laughed at, looked down upon. She hated them. Their songs. Their laughs. She lived with a hatred that festered as she grew older.

They were teens, but still, nobody came to help her. They called her a monster for no reason other than the moons on the night of her birth. Everyone she knew avoided her like “the Changeling she was”. Except for the other one… Suvon.

Suvon was kind to Vesper, and would often share food and talk about her feelings. Yet she seemed just as resentful of her situation. Vesper considered her a friend, but one day she just disappeared.

It left Vesper without her only emotional support.

She walked around, now alone, and kept hearing the words.

“One little monster”

I am not a monster…

“Born under a moon of night”

Please don’t walk away! I don’t want to hurt you!

“One little changeling”

But… why would I want to be friends with you?

“A monster, what a fright!”

Maybe you’d shut up if I really were one.

If you’re looking for a monster, then I'll give you a monster.

It’s as if the clan was wiped off the map, and no one knew what happened to it. But that was a while ago now. Vesper was a monster. She accepted it. She joined a group that accepted her, called the Adric Sect, after the leader heard her story. Krow treated her kindly and acted like a father to her, and she felt comfortable in the group.

And then Krow left. His son Justinian took rule. Something about Justinian had always rubbed Vesper the wrong way, maybe how his air of superiority felt like the ones she experienced in her youth. She even considered leaving, with Krow or otherwise.

But she stayed.

This was the only place that accepted a monster.
