No matter what her parents attempted to convince her, she wouldn’t listen. Sure, the Behemoth was safe. The Shrieking Wilds served as a suitable source of protection. Yes, it was beautiful. Just a glance at the Everbloom Gardens was proof. The Gladeveins provided a constant source of supplies and provisions. What else could a young Coatl possibly want in this paradise? Freedom. The trees always barricaded her from spreading her wings, the muggy rainforest air prevented her lungs from tasting the fresh atmosphere outside of Nature’s realm. The enticing scent of independence would lazily float its way towards her through the sticky air, only to be yanked from her grasping talons by a harsh reprimanding. Deciding that she had had enough, the young Coatl left home to find freedom. To find a dwelling far away from overprotective parents, far from stinging rebukes. Most of all, Serafina wanted to be isolated from the sticky-sweet lies of paradise. For her, paradise was where freedom was. And independence resided far, far away from society. The moon was full, a heavy droplet of condensed milk hovering over the Gladeveins. Any traces of Serafina had been wiped from her home, the emptiness brief and subtle, like her shadow on the trampled leaves resting upon the forest floor. A second joined hers, skimming along the dead foliage on silent wings. Scion had agreed to escape as well- the freedom calling from beyond the leafy treetops of the Viridian Labyrinth was slowly pulling him away from his already-distant family. ________________________________________ |

"I can hear my pig of a grandfather snoring from here,” joked Scion. The Coatl suppressed a snort, beckoning for her friend to follow. The two lurched away from their murky memories, leaving their worries behind. Their home- if they could call the forest that at all- was soon reduced to a single speck of viridescence nestled within blankets of fog. The two quickly learned that sovereignty did not reveal itself easily to those seeking it, however desperate. Beastclans willingly threw themselves in the path of Scion and Serafina, bent on uprooting their goals. Talons mauled their snouts and punctured holes in the fragile membranes of their wings. Provisions ran dangerously low, leaving the two to feed on stale rinds and rotten meat. Finally, as they entered the Tangled Wood, Serafina began to find hope. It was as if a piece of the Viridian Labyrinth had been kissed by shadow, and dragged away through the gloom. She found comfort in the way the nightingales trilled from the trees, the coarseness of the rail-thin pines. The Clan of Grandmae embraced the Southern Icefield, along with its ringing solidarity. It was within this clan that Serafina and Scion saw themselves.
Within this clan, they saw a home.
