In ages past, the line between the living and the dead was only ever crossed once by any given soul. A lifespark burned out. A body was buried. The memories left behind began to fade. It was a simple fact, a rule that had always defined Sornieth: the dead did not cross back into the realm of the living.

That was before the Shattering. When the Pillar fell, the realm the gods had created while they dreamed could now be accessed by creatures other than themselves. The dead traveled there instead of what came beyond, and some of them could even go back. They could return to Sornieth. They could live in the mortal world once again.

It was a gateway, a place between life and death. Something entirely other, an in-between world that eventually became known as the Realms of Eternity.

Solstice called it her second chance.
