____Andraste was always a bit unconventional in her approach to science and life. She was lucky enough to be raised in a lab full of mad scientists just like her, sociable and with a penchant for explosives. Rules were for other dragons, because who had time for rules when there was a new cannon to test.

____And there was always a new cannon to test.

____Like all good things, it couldn't last. Too many of the scientists had blown themselves or each other up, losing limbs and scales and feathers, and the lab could not maintain itself. Andraste struck out for new opportunities, taking more than a few of her experiments with her.

____If some of her coworkers' things slipped into her bag next to materials and explosives, there was no one left to accuse her.

____Andy wandered the Shifting Expanse, looking for a new place to call home. She went from lab to lab, offering her expertise and charming the resident scientists and engineers out of their results to add to her own knowledge. Sometimes she was chased out, sometimes she left in the night, but there was always some place new to go.

____Happenstance led her to the laboratory where Cotriona worked. Andy did not have the security clearance needed to acquire some rare and volatile materials, and she didn't have the time to slowly lie her way up the work ladder. Cotriona, with her dissatisfaction hidden in her body language and subtle faces she never let anyone see, was a perfect target for Andy's charm.

____Andy had not expected to gain a best friend from the venture.

Rapid Disassembly

____Cotriona, or Cat as Andy had taken to calling her, filled all the blanks in Andy's skillset. Andy could charm her way into someone's pocket, but Cat could lift their wallet without them ever finding out. Andy could figure out what materials were useful, but Cat had a natural eye for their value. Andy's charm even helped Cat maintain a double life, keeping the attention of Cat's coworkers away from her thieving friend.

____Andy just kept waiting for the other shoe to drop.

____The shoe dropped at last year's Dessert Party, hosted by Lightning Flight for their Thundercrack Carnivale. Cat's lab was invited to excavate a dig site discovered during the festivities, and Andy tagged along hoping to snag some artifacts and swindle fest-goers out of their hard-earned treasure.

____And what a treasure trove the excavation was. An ancient pre-dragon dig site, right underneath the Shifting Expanse. Among all the massive treasures of the ancient world, no one notices when small bits and baubles went missing into pockets of enterprising researchers. Andy and Cat weren't even the only ones doing it, but they were the ones who knew how to find a fence.

____The bracer was not their fault. Not really. Well, the documents had been falsified by Cat but they hadn't really known what they were stealing.

____They just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. No one meant to have a dragon explode in an unforeseen magical catastrophe.

____Cat had snuck into the Reclamation Bureau's office to retrieve the bracer as Andy distracted them in conversation. Their plan went off without a hitch, and they took off, disappearing into the underbelly of the Lightning Flight.

____Though they were easily able to pawn off most of their goods, they kept the bracer because of the uneasy feeling they got from it. A year passed, and the two caught wind of a dragon who might be able to explain just what this bracer was, one who was hidden deep in the Shifting Emporium.
