If there is one thing that can be said of a dragon like April, it's that there is such a thing as overthinking. He knows that he's doing it, of course, and it is annoying most of the time, but it gets especially worrisome when he realises that he may or may not be in love with his fiercest rival. One can quite clearly see where this is going.

To all outward appearances, both April and August seemed to regard each other as rivals, even enemies. It was a while before they broke that barrier down-- as it turned out, August was in love with him from the very start-- and even longer than that for April to work on not getting anxious overthinking scenarios. August's problem was quite the opposite.

Now in a tentative relationship, the two are slowly beginning to work their differences out. They know what makes each other tick; the battlefield brings all sorts of dragons together, and April already knew much from their time training in the Plague clan. At the very least, he's observant.

And now he wakes up in the morning to a green-eyed gaze and a rare smile on his lover's face, and thinks: it can't possibly get any better than this.

April hears of August's reputation before he even meets the skydancer:

A brute who only knows how to use his claws for combat and little else, who barely thinks before he acts. It isn't the best first impression, and it's further reinforced the day they step into the same arena, weapons at the ready.

August is half a head shorter than him, but all April sees is tar-dark feathers ridged with tough scales, rippling muscle beneath glossy plumage, and a threat.

The Wasteland isn't short of warriors and assassins, but a good teacher is hard to find. And April, brilliant, naive, Lightborn April, is here with all the intent and purpose to learn. What he does not realise is that August is here for another reason entirely.

That is his first mistake.
