Midnight enjoys watching her brother grow up with his family, but she wants more. Middy wants to feel water spray on her face, or the cold glow of an iceberg on her talons. Although Snowfall kept begging her to stay, the female made her desicion, and will be on her way as soon as the winds pick up more. 
The air currents took Midnight into the Wind’s home. It was late, and below she heard the call of festive laughter and the smell of cooking food. Tired from her journey, she followed the sounds and smells to a temporary looking camp. Dragons of all sizes curled around a fire, talking to one another. She strode up, asking for shelter and food for the night. The clan was alltogether delighted to have a new traveller in their midst. Around the fire, she discovered this was a roving clan of merchants, and heard about all of the wonderous places they’d been. While they mostly stuck to the Wind territory, an elderly looking Fae with haunting magenta eyes told her of the Arcane lands to the west. Of the floating isles and vast troves of knowledge. A light sparked in her. She wanted to know about the world, what better place than the sage’s of the arcane! She still had to actually visit everywhere, of course, but she thought it best to go out prepared than blindly blunder into the unknown. She thanked the group and left early in the morning, now searching for the land of a thousand islands, and enjoying every unexpected turn along the way. 
Midnight could not help but be surprised when she met her home clan, making their travels from Wind territories to Shadow. She ran up to her twin brother, Snowfall, who fell back by the force the nocturne had rammed him. He hugged Midnight, motioning to Peak to come and say hello. The nocturne got filled in on how the clan had grown, and how Inna had taken in a young skydancer who would become a spirit like herself. The dragons flocked towards the old friend, although the nocturne knew she would have to tell them she could not stay. Not for long. Her brother pulled her away, asking her a dreaded question. "Middy- look, I'm as glad as anyone you're here, but for how long?" The two nocturnes got quiet, sitting in silence as Midnight did not answer. Soon afterwards, Midnight had an egg with a father she would not even tell her brother. Though she kept quiet- the father flaunted it to the point everyone could guess it was Viking, a visiting dragon from another clan. She stayed as the egg grew, but as it cracked open and Viking left the clan, she had followed suite. Her son grew up happily with his uncle. The young nocturne looked so much like his mother that Snowfall could not help but tell him all about her, and how she had left to travel. Midnight did not know of this, of course, and simply continued her journey. This was until she got a letter from her worried brother. Hokori's body had been found under a bunch of rubble from the Earth clan he had been visiting. Without a second to spare the concerned mother flew faster then she ever had before. As she saw the camp her brother and his boyfriend had been staying in, she barreled into the ground. Hot tears streaming down her face as she sobbed. Her only child was gone forever. Peak and Snowfall ran over, attempting to comfort the grieving mother as she curled into a ball. The two hated seeing her in so much pain, but thought of no ways to help her. "It's my fault," Midnight choked out, her breath still not steady "If I had just stayed. Taught him how dangerous other dragons can be- he- he would be here safe. Alive..." Now they understood. The wildclaw and nocturne couple knew that thought far too well. For Snowfall, it was the reason he and Midnight were in the clan in the first place. For Peak, it was the reason he never got to forgive his mother before she passed away. Loss of family was something they all shared, but they had each other. |
