The Surgeon
precise . smooth . unfeeling
Eglantine grew up very aware of both her beauty and her impeccable health, rare traits in the middle of the Plaguebringer's domain. Her reverence for the goddess, though it has always been strong, took a very unusual form: instead of spreading disease, she enjoys the much greater challenge of curing it. This is not as contradictory as it may seem: Eglantine's medical practice is not something born of either emotion or moral conviction. She doesn't really care that dragons suffer from sickness, she cares that breaking apart sickness is fun. Each time her best efforts fail, it renews her awe for the power of survival of the fittest. As a symbolic indicator of both her own strange immunity (which she is still investigating) and her precision and elegance, she adorns herself in ever pristine white and ribbons. Keeping them clean at all times, even when she's in an operating table or studying strange and gruesome samples, is a top priority for her, a symbol of vanity. but also a reflection of the circumstances in her life that contributed to make Eglantine truly unique. She's comfortable to be in Spring Song, where she arrived when she was still a lot younger and just beginning to explore her own strange nature. She and the other Plague dragons within the clan are sworn by an oath of fealty to not spread rot in the Gladekeeper's doman, and in exchange are treated with the same justice and respect which is due any other dragon. However, clan members in general fear and avoid her, associating her with broken bones and dangerous infections. For her part, Eglantine tends to like other dragons in her own somewhat detached way. She enjoys Dr. Hibiscus's company, for all that she laughs at the crush he obviously has on her, and she's a devoted master to Peach. However, she knows she's never experienced the intense emotional bonds she sees other dragons forming. With the possible exception of Peach, other dragons are nothing to her but passing entertainment. If the entire clan died tomorrow, she'd be about as upset as if blood splashed on her neck bow, but no more. She knows in her heart that this coldness of the mind is her own sicknes - and she uses it to aid her in her greatness. |
