______ The two silhouettes slid through the deep ocean water as if it were nothing but air, their sleek bodies obviously meant for their habitats. The guardian pulled slightly higher, turning back to giggle at her mate. The imperial responded with a light hearted smirk and a flap of his wings. Soon enough they were back side by side, just the way they liked it.

______ Though as they rose higher and higher through the water, sunlight falling on their scales more frequently, something seemed. . . off. The surface was about 20 metres above them when they stopped, each with a deep sea creature clutched in a claw from the hunting trip they were returning from.

______ “The water seems weird. . . do you notice anything?” The guardian spoke up, picking at her anglerfish slightly. She was obviously nervous.

______ The imperial did not respond.

______ “Llyr?”

______ Llyr looked at his mate. “When have we ever seen a log this far out?” He paused, still staring up at the surface, before handing her his coffinfish. “Hold that, I’m gonna check it out.”

______ Llyr zipped up to the surface with a quick flap of his wings, before wrestling the buoyant log back down to Anahita.

______ “This thing looks straight out of the Tangled Wood.” He picked at a particularly strange mushroom as he spoke. “Anahita, what’s going on?”

______ “Well, I asked you that same question.” The guardian spat. “Sorry, I’m just a bit nervous.”

______ Llyr opened his mouth to say something as he continued to inspect the mushroom, but he realized Anahita wasn’t paying attention to him. Following her gaze, he saw a large cloud of murkiness rushing towards them. In an instant Anahita had grabbed Llyr’s hand and was swimming away at lightning fast speeds, which the imperial eventually matched. Stealing a look back, he saw their prey being swallowed up by the cloud in the distance, which only fueled his drive even more.

______ Eventually, after seemingly hours of swimming as hard as they could, the duo scrambled their way up onto the dry land of the Scarred Wasteland. They looked out over their old home, a small section of the sea close to both the Flotsam Town that marked the center of the Sea of a Thousand Currents and the Driftwood Drag. Anahita realized what had happened in an instant and began hurriedly explaining it to Llyr.

______ “So, that giant tree-” She pointed with a shaky claw out to the tip of a shadowy canopy, slowly sinking. “It must’ve been blocking an outlet of the Driftwood Drag- the log you found was probably part of it.”

______ In the moments the guardian paused for a breath, Llyr jumped in. “And it finally gave way, letting in all the muck from that swamp.”

______ Anahita nodded, and the two stared at each other.

______ Finally, Llyr spoke up. “Where are we going to go now?”

______ “Perhaps we could take a break here in the Plague Flight, then find somewhere else. Maybe a new Flight could be good for us.” Anahita gave a broken and tired smile as she turned to the red landscape that they stood on. Far in the distance, the giant crystals of the Arcane Flight breached the horizon.

______ ~~~

______ The sun shone down on Anahita’s submerged back as she took her daily swim around the bases of the crystals. They refracted the sunlight in a most peculiar way- causing the water to function as a sort of heat map. The more pink a section of water was, the warmer. The guardian found herself in a rather pink patch now, soaking up the crystalline sun.

______ A school of fish flitted past her, which she watched swim away for a moment with a toothy grin plastered on her face. Nothing, besides Llyr, could make her happier than seeing an area previously contaminated with various chemicals now teeming with ocean life.

______ Well, perhaps not teeming- but the water was clear and the life that was present seemed rather healthy. Luckily, Anahita had managed to put an end to the dumping of residuals and leftovers out the window of the chemical research plants scattered across the Crystalspine Reaches. This had left the waters below clear and clean, a euphoric sight for Anahita.

______ Next are the observatories, I guess. She sighed as a glimmer caught her eye. Closer inspection returned a cracked lense, which the guardian clutched in one claw before using the other to resurface. Perhaps she’d take a break from conservation efforts and visit her mate. It had been a while, after all.

______ Glass lense still clutched in one claw, the guardian began scaling one of the crystals, before alighting into the sky with a graceful swoop. The next thing she knew, she was soaring over the massive crystals and countless observatories; the whole thing gave her a bittersweet feeling, as she pondered the many crucial discoveries made by these polluting laboratories.

______ Anahita began to study the lense, running her claw along it’s crack until it shattered in her hand. Pausing mid flight, she tucked the shattered glass into a small pouch held at her waist. She let herself fall whilst doing so, and once finished, regained her altitude with a powerful push of her large guardian wings. Sometimes flying was almost as exhilarating as swimming.

______ Finally, she spotted the telltale tree-less spot where Llyr lived, quite obvious once pointed out this deep in the Starwood Strand. Anahita began to descend over top, a smile spreading over her face at the notion of seeing her mate for the first time in a week or so. Though something else caught her eye as she became level with the highest canopies. That damned duo of reporters, always trying to snag a picture of Llyr, for whatever reason.

______ Anahita continued her descent, until she hovered above the water- she knew the imperial was sunk in the lake, obviously hidden, so she wouldn’t touch down just yet. Her eyes narrowed at the pearlcatcher and his fae assistant, before she unleashed some obscenities rarely heard from her maw.

______ As they fled the glade, she set herself down where they’d stood a moment before, staring lovingly as her mate emerged from the depths of the lake.

- Fun-loving, generally outgoing

- Flip flops between the Starwood Strand and the Crystalspine Reaches

- Mate lives steadily in one lake tucked deep in the forest- hence why she goes back to
visit

- Steadily working on conservation efforts for the oceans around the Crystalspine reaches, as the abundance of chemicals thrown out after experiments is maddening to her

- Has begun conservation efforts in Llyr’s lake as well, though less so as it’s so hidden away
