He'd only meant to take a quick nap, to take a step back from the issue at hand without having to step away at all.

Well. Nothing he can do about it now. He curses under his breath, taps away an apologetic transmission to engineering, and peels himself away from his desk, stumbling into bed. It can wait until the morning, surely, he thinks, and closes his eyes.

He opens them again, and rolls over, instinctively, to check the time.

The door is still closed, two steps in front of him. How easy it would be to reach out and open it again. Easier still, if it creaked open of its own accord, if the room's geometry stretched, inverted itself, to send him stumbling through. It would have been so simple to have been given no other choice but to drown under that perfect blue, to let this new knowledge flood his lungs without restitution.

But - and this is the crux of the issue - there is a choice here. He has to be the one to stand up from his bed and place his hand on the doorknob. He has to open the door himself, step across the frame-

And fall.


He comes into work as usual the next day. Offers some helpfully critical suggestions to engineering, fixes that insecurity he was struggling with last night much more quickly than his coworkers anticipated. And if he seems a little more foolhardy, a little more detached from the world that now seems far too small to him - no one thinks worse of him for it. (He knows they can't.) 		********
