She could recollect the voices of her parents, the whirlpools, and the sweet-scented cliffs. All replaced. Now she listened to the music of her adopters, and curled in the garden. Soaking in the sun, her hide camouflaged her from the relentless work of her clan mates. She felt content to rest, even if for a few rare minutes, while the business of the orchard surrounded her.

A spiral sang a jumbled tune from across the path. It was her favorite time of day when her neighbors composed their songs for the trees. She sighed so the plants of the garden swayed with her breath. Her home was here. Jyn rolled and stretched with the dappling sunlight. Even if her pack was not.

A sharp note cracked through the sunny afternoon. Jyn shook to her feet, noticing the heat pattern of a spiral wince from behind a tree. Another spiral curled along a branch, Jyn recognized Creek running to the broken instrument in the grass. The commotion was small, yet unlike her neighbors. She cocked her head to listen to their whispers, when the source of their anxiety stirred.

Branches swayed and moaned in the path of the guardian, his footsteps radiated against the ground to her feet. Jyn felt her mouth dry. She watched Creek comfort her partner; Nickel cradled the stringed instrument in his arms. He turned to the shaking leaves drawing nearer. "It's not Aesop," she heard him murmur. No, it was worse.

A black head appeared out of the canopy. Rowan shook the girth of his neck almost in slow motion, basking in the trees, then squinting down at them.

"Hello," Nickel called casually, coiling out from behind his tree. Creek followed.

Rowan thoughtlessly stroked a claw through his beard tangled in the branches, and ignored the spiral's call. He eyed the small garden and shouldered his way down the orchard row. His glossy black paws stopped before Jyn's wilted form.

"Come with me," he growled.
