 Fresh scents and summer wind // We thrive in odd lands // A place to call home As the sun set over the plaguelands, the world seemed to catch fire in warm glow of the autumn evening. Yarylo surveyed his crops, checking in on every individual plant to give them the love they needed. He glided just above the tops of the wheat, with particularly tall specimens tickling his belly as he flew. It would all be ready for harvest soon, to be stored away to feed the clan during the harsh winter of the Scarred Wasteland, when things crept out of the pits and bogs to prey on unprepared clans. So lost in his thoughts on winter preparations, Yarylo almost did not notice the rot. A tiny patch of scourge in a small corner of the wheat field, so imperceptible than any other dragon would miss. He stopped in his flight as his magic recoiled from the rot. With an uncharacteristic snarl, he zeroed in on the offending scourge that would spread to the rest of his fields if given any time. The infected stalk hid well among its unafflicted neighbors, but Yarylo felt the mutated plant, with eyes that watched and tendrils that crept slowly, ever so slowly, before he even saw the monstrosity. A green goo steadily dripped off it, soaking the earth he had so carefully turned farmable, and a rank smell assaulted his nose, but Yarylo pressed on. He surrounded the stalk with his magic and forced it to grasp onto the slippery rot when all he wanted to to was recoil away. He yanked it out, making sure the roots came out as well. With a burst of bright, painful light, he seared the scourge away into nothingness. With the plant gone, he sighed, the weight of his magic and responsibility bearing down on him. At least he had caught it in time. A few gentle swirls of magic purified the earth where the stalk once stood. He checked each nearby stalk of wheat to make sure they were safe. Satisfied, he returned home as darkness fell. Soon, very soon, he would be able to sleep for as long as he desired. He just had to guide his fields to the first snowfall. (Written by akitcougar.) |
